Football Preview: Season of streaks
Oaks Christian, Calabasas among those trying to keep alive or end strings

SEASON PREVIEW

The Star's Top 10 »
Area schools carry the weight of three of the longest streaks in state history into the 2007 high school football season.

Moorpark, a section runner-up the last two years, opens the season tonight at 7 at home against Mayfair.
Oaks Christian's 46-game winning streak is tied for the longest in section history and ranks fourth on the all-time state list, according to CalHiSports.com.
Winner of four consecutive section titles, Oaks Christian can tie Santa Rosa Cardinal Newman, the program the Lions beat in overtime for the 2006 Division III state title, for third place by winning its season opener at home against Lompoc on Friday.

Calabasas is tied for the fourth longest losing streak in state history. The Coyotes have dropped 42 consecutive games. Moorpark owns the state record with 46 straight losses from 1977 to 1982. The schedule is unkind to Calabasas. After opening the season Sept. 7 at home against El Camino Real, Calabasas is on the road for four consecutive games.

St. Bonaventure, which enters the season as the state's No. 1-ranked team by CalHiSports.com, brings county records of 173 consecutive games scoring, 11 straight league championships and 46 straight league wins into the season.

But the Seraphs will be without the architect of the program's seven section championship seasons. Jon Mack, the winningest high school football coach in Ventura County history with 163 victories, resigned last spring to become the head coach at Ventura College.
Fillmore and Santa Clara ended two streaks last season when they tied Bishop Diego for the Frontier League title. Fillmore had gone 23 years without a football league title, while Santa Clara (10-3) had a winning season for the first time in 16 years.
Favored to repeat as league champions are Westlake (Marmonte), St. Bonaventure (Channel), Rio Mesa (Pacific View), Oaks Christian (Tri-Valley) and Santa Clara (Frontier).

One of the premier non-league games finds a Sept. 21 rematch between Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure at Larrabee Stadium.

The intensity for the rematch has toned down significantly. Last year, Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure brought 33- and 27-game winning streaks, national rankings and the attention that comes with it to a sold-out stadium. Oaks Christian won 59-13, handing St. Bonaventure its biggest loss in decades.
One thing that hasn't changed is the game's significance. The winner will gain an edge in early polls for the 2007 Division III state bowl game.
There are six new area head coaches: Mike Leibin (Thousand Oaks), Lance Martin (Calabasas), Todd Therrien (St. Bonaventure), Steve Ruedaflores (Hueneme), Matt Dollar (Fillmore) and Matt Hoefler (Grace Brethren). Therrien was a longtime assistant and defensive coordinator under Mack. The program blueprint remains in place, said Therrien, although "some of the individual things have changed." Therrien brought in Steve Chase to run St. Bonaventure's conditioning program. "He has been exceptional all summer," said Therrien.
Mack's one-year-old record for career wins by a county football coach may not last long.

Westlake coach Jim Benkert has 149 wins, including a 12-game winning streak to open the 2006 season. Benkert needs six wins to pass former Rio Mesa coach John Reardon for third place. Right behind Benkert on the all-time county list is Nordhoff's Cliff Farrar (141 victories).
Once again, collegiate recruiters have turned their attention on area players. Right at the top of their lists is St. Bonaventure running back Darrell Scott. The Moorpark transfer enters the season with 5,182 career yards and 64 touchdowns. Scott is within 2,818 yards of becoming only the third back in state history with 8,000 career yards. He is rated as high as No. 2 on national recruitings lists.

Among the blue-chip schools pursuing Scott are USC, Florida State, Texas, UCLA, North Carolina, Penn State and LSU.
As many as two dozen area athletes could commit to Division I football programs before the 2007 season is over.
Other top prospects include: Langston Jackson (Simi Valley), Vaughn Dotsy and Ryan Panapa (St. Bonaventure), Chris Owusu and Trace Biskin (Oaks Christian), Quentin Greenlaw and Ina Liaina (Rio Mesa), Colby Cameron (Newbury Park) and Randi Vines (Santa Clara).

Re: Marmonte League Review
so how does Langston Jackson get picked at #15 RB in the state by scout.com and yet most of the marmonte league guru's in here have him behind lister and the kid from nb who hasn't yet carried the ball at the varsity level? Now if you are saying those schools have better lines, I would have to agree, but Jackson is the best back in the marmonte league. meyer93

Re: Marmonte League Review
Sorry Homer but I have to disagree. Jackson is very good and many schools would love to have him, but I think Lister is the best, or if not the best will at least have the best numbers. Here is why. T.O. will have the ability to pass the ball well enough to keep teams honest, which in turn allows for less defenders to key on him. Being that he has a better line he will have more yards.
Langston will have to hope that Simi can establish a passing game this year. Otherwise he may not even have the second best numbers.Unfortunately all that matters when you are talking about the best is who has better numbers. Lister will have the better numbers.

Re: Marmonte League Review
Numbers? Numbers? Can't wait for the season to start to shut some people up. Predictions on high school student performance is so ridiculous because teens can dramatically change from one year to the next. Barring exterior circumstances, my money is on Langston. Senior year focus vs junior year hype. I also have hope in Simi's O-line. What makes you think this set of kids can't block? They are big, could be tough too! We will see soon who will be eating their words. Fess up when it happens. No excuses then. The Marmonte looks very competitive. We will soon see! YouShouldHaveThatLookedAt

SimiHomer, you have to remember that most of your peers here only know what they can find on the web, so ability is defined and rated by MaxPreps stats.

Re: Marmonte League Review
Can't all three just be really, really good?I guarantee you they all dominate and all three play at the next level.

Simi Valley Pioneers
Last season's result: (7th in Marmonte, 37 overall) The inability to win close games once again proved to be Simi Valley's Achilles' heel in 2006. SVHS lost to playoff qualifiers Westlake, Thousand Oaks and Royal by a combined 19 points.
Notable returnees: Langston Jackson, sr., RB (200 rushes, 998 yards, 10 TDs); Jesse Swayze, sr., WR (26 receptions, 286 yards, 1 TD); Mike Ortiz, sr., DL (53 tackles, 3 sacks); Alan Steele, sr., LB (77 tackles, 2 sacks); Adam Hernandez, sr., S (13 tackles, 2 INTs); Marcus Shelby, sr., CB (32 tackles); Chance Cross, sr., SS (59 tackles, 2 INTs) Impact newcomer: Keith Williams, jr., WR Who they play: The Pioneers play three of their first four games at home, including the Marmonte League opener against Moorpark (Sept. 28). After that, Simi Valley has five of its final six league games away from the friendly confines of SVHS. A chance at the playoffs may very well hinge on the final three games of the regular season- all on the road- against Newbury Park (Oct. 26), Thousand Oaks (Nov. 2) and city rival Royal (Nov. 9).

Overview: They say a productive running game and stout defense wins football games. If that's the case, the under-the-radar Pioneers could be in good shape. Jackson's an explosive ball carrier who's already received a full scholarship offer from Utah. He's also being recruited by multiple Pac10 universities. Running behind an offensive line that head coach Todd Borowski says is the most tactically sound in his three years at the helm, Jackson should easily post a 1,000-yard campaign.
Juniors Jared Zahorik and Tim Ferralli continue to battle for the starting quarterback job. Both have made strides in their on-field development, but neither has claimed the starting role. Williams, a transfer wideout from Thousand Oaks, is 6-foot-3 and should be a versatile perimeter weapon.
The Pioneer defense, led by Ortiz, Steele, Hernandez, Shelby and Cross, returns seven starters and will be much improved, Borowski said. Simi Valley allowed 24.8 points per game last year.
In a nutshell: Simi Valley has been knocking on the postseason door some time now- two years ago they started 5-0 and finished 5-5- but for one reason or another they haven't been able to get over the hump. Borowski expects much better than another seventh-place finish, and the talent is there to surprise some teams. We say the Pioneers will go as far as their defense takes them.

Langston Jackson already has an offer on the table from Utah, and could be on the verge of getting his first offers from the Pac-10. Washington, Oregon and California are the biggest schools paying attention to him, while Fresno State and UNLV have also shown some interest. Langston Jackson is a straight up the gut running back that likes to get the tough yard."Coaches can't call me right now, because it's during a recruiting dead period, but they've said they'd get back in touch with me when it ends." He has hopes of receiving a couple offers when he takes unofficial visits to Washington and Oregon. He doesn't have specific dates set, but he is aiming for some time in August. He says the most important factors in a school are the city and the coaching staff. "Location is not important, but I want to go somewhere that has a good city environment, and somewhere I have some chemistry with the coaches."

On the football field, Jackson is a big, powerful running back, at 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds and runs a 4.64 forty. "I'm hard working. I never quit, that's the kind of player I am. I went to a camp in Ventura. I stacked up real good against the competition, and Cal's coaches were there." He considers Cal to be his ideal school, but doesn't know if they'll offer him. He's been starting at Simi Valley High School, Calif. since he was a sophomore, and he's set lofty goals for his senior season. "I want to rush for 2,000 yards and help my team make it to the playoffs. We haven't been to the playoffs in a while, so it's time to change things up." In 2006, as a junior, he ran for 988 yards and scored ten

Simi's star realigns
Langston Jackson's move to fullback expects to be key for Marmonte team coming off 3-7 season
By Loren Ledin Friday, September 7, 2007
Jeff Earle / Special to The Star
Simi Valley High's Langston Jackson rushed for 988 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior.

Move Langston Jackson a few feet forward, and the Simi Valley High football team moves ... where?
"A league championship, the playoffs, that's the goal," says Jackson, a senior running back who rushed for 988 yards and 10 touchdowns a year ago.
If Simi Valley is slated to become an impact squad this season, Jackson and his new position in the Pioneers offense will play a significant role.
Coach Todd Borowski has shifted Jackson from tailback to fullback, and moved Simi Valley out of the "I" formation.
The reasoning? Put Jackson and fellow running back Tommy Dowling closer to the line of scrimmage, and each takes a quicker charge upfield.
"I've gone back to the same offense I used at Anaheim High, when Reuben Droughns (now with the New York Giants) rushed for 2,500 yards," said Borowski. "We're excited. I can't wait to see what we look like in the first game."
Simi Valley, 3-7 a year ago, plays host to Buena High (3-7 in 2006) tonight beginning at 7 in the season opener for both teams.
While the non-league game pairs two teams hungry for forward progress in 2007, the matchup offers an early progress report.
Simi Valley would like nothing better than to get Jackson off and running. Buena, inexperienced on defense, particularly up front, wants to prove its mettle in stopping an elite running back.
"We know we've got to stop No. 4 (Jackson)," said Buena coach Justin Berenson. "Our league has a couple of top running backs, so a top priority for us will come in stopping the run.
"We're young in spots, but I love the attitude for the group. They're working hard, and doing everything they can to have a good season."
Berenson has seen his defense jell in fall camp.
The secondary looks likes a strong point, led by cornerback Dakota Lovejoy and free safety Anthony Pelupessy. Junior linebacker Ben White could be headed to a breakout campaign.
"Everybody is anxious to start the season," said Berenson.
Simi Valley's Borowski actually made his move with his prized running back at the tail end of last season.
Unhappy with the blocking of his offensive line, Borowski shifted Jackson closer to the line of scrimmage for the last three games.
As a result, Jackson rushed for 130 yards against Thousand Oaks and 142 against arch rival Royal.
"I like it," said Jackson. "It gets me through the hole quicker."
Jackson spent the offseason getting stronger and faster, and has bulked up to 205 pounds. His speed has improved to 4.62 in the 40-yard dash.
"It's been a lot of work," he said. "This is a special season for me because I'm a senior. We want to come out of this with a big year."
Jackson already knows he will be playing college football beginning next season.
He's been offered a full scholarship by Utah. Borowski expects at least five Pacific-10 schools to follow through in the weeks ahead.
Though his fullback is gifted, Borowski is looking for a balanced workload this season.
"We can't put everything on Langston, otherwise all the teams we'll play will put eight or nine guys in the box," said Borowski. "We need to throw the ball well, and Tommy Dowling is a good running back, too.
"Our offensive line is twice as good this year, and that's a plus. We're not going to wear out Langston. Ideally, we're looking to get him around 20 touches a game."

These are some of the local athletes that are expected to shine under the Friday night lights this fall. E-mail us at fff@keyt.com

Christian Winnewisser, QB/LB, Bishop Diego
Christian threw for 1,800 yards in 2006 as a junior and received All League and All County honors. Winnewisser helped lead the Cardinals to a semi-finals appreance last year.

Aaron Skinner, RB/DB, Bishop Diego
An All League and All County selection at running back in 2006, Aaron racked up 1,200 yards while splitting time in the backfield last year.

Darrell Scott, RB, St. Bonaventure
Widely regarded as one of the nations number one running backs, Scott clocks in with a 4.3 sec. 40 yard dash time. He led Moorpark to the CIF championship game in ’06 with 3,145 yards rushing and 45 touchdowns as a junior for the Musketeers. Darrell has transferred to St. Bonaventure for his final high school season.

Chris Potter, QB, Oaks ChristianPotter has some big shoes to fill with the graduation of QB Jimmy Clausen (Notre Dame). Potter saw a lot of action under center last year, as Clausen was taken out early when games became blowouts. He was also a receiver and returned punts. Potter brings more mobility to the QB position this year and he will no doubt be a headache for linebackers and defensive linemen. Chris has committed to Boise State.

Cierre Wood, RB-WR-KR, Santa Clara
Wood was named California Sophomore Player of the Year in '06 and was the only sophomore to attain First Team All-CIF honors. Cierre has already received a scholarship offer from San Diego St. and has many more college recruiters interested in his services. He is an all-purpose star who can run, catch and receive. Last year he used his talents to lead Santa Clara to its 1st Frontier League title in years. Cierre was nominated for Friday Football Focus player of the week multiple times.

Randi Vines, TE/DE, Santa Clara
This 6'4", 220 lb senior gives Santa Clara another weapon to complement Cierre Wood. Vines has already attracted offers from Division 1 Schools such as Wake Forest, Utah, and San Diego St.

Marmonte Predictions
Agoura 24 Ventura 21 (Agoura has some things to work out, but pull out a W)

Calabasas 13 ECR 12 (Please...Please....Please)

Simi Valley 21 Buena 7 (Simi dominates time of possession against a young D)

Newbury Park 35 Camarillo 21 (Typical NP, a couple 1 minute drives)

Chaminade 28 Royal 14 (Hopefully I'm wrong, just not enough weapons for Royal)

Hart 31 Moorpark 14 (A combination of more talent and revenge propels Hart)

Thousand Oaks 21 Loyola 20 (TO runs the last 4:00 off the clock to hold on)

Good luck to all of the Marmonte teams. In spite of a couple of those predictions, I am pulling for everyone!

The Deuce's Pick: Hurley's team could be special
Friday, September 7, 2007
Dear George Hurley:
The Deuce loves you, man.
Not in the huggy sort of a way.
He likes what you bring to the field and the way you run your program. Maybe we ought to reverse that order.
That said, the Deuce knows he created hard times last season. Seems like any time he picked the Panthers to win, they lost.
Nothing intentional on the Deuce's part.
He's asking forgiveness in advance for the 2007 season. All scouting reports the Deuce has received through the mail indicate this just might be a magical season for Newbury Park.
So, until something is proven otherwise, the Deuce is picking and grinning for the Panthers.
Last week: 5-2. Season: 5-2, .714.
Hart 24, Moorpark 14: Rightfully so, Hart is ranked right behind St. Bonaventure in the Northern Division.
This was supposed to be a down year for Moorpark, but we didn't see any evidence of that in season opener.

Ventura 17, Agoura 14: Ventura was one play away from busting out with a win last week. Some crazy things seem to happen in Agoura openers.

Buena 13, Simi Valley 12: Buena is looking to build upon good non-league performances from 2006. It was only two years ago that Simi Valley had a stunning 5-0 start.

Newbury Park 23, Camarillo 17: Camarillo may be stuck in survival mode for few weeks. At least. Marmonte League title contender and pass-happy Newbury Park will put constant pressure on the secondary.

Oaks Christian 42, Muir 28: After being outscored 117-6 by Oaks Christian the last two years, can Muir find a morale victory by closing the gap tonight?

Oxnard 34, Santa Barbara 20: Bad news, Santa Barbara. Oxnard is bigger, stronger and more experienced than the teams that won in 2005 and 2006.

Chaminade 24, Royal 16: Defending Mission League champion Chaminade was one win away from reaching the Western Division final last season.

El Camino Real 18, Calabasas 16: Have faith Calabasas. The Deuce has a strong feeling that your long losing streak will come to an end. Soon. Hey, you were only one point away from tying El Camino Real last season.

Rio Mesa 35, San Marcos 21: There seems to be an endless supply of outstanding skill people in the Rio Mesa program. Spartans are 11-4 in non-league games over the last three years.

Channel Islands 14, Santa Paula 10: Dating back to last season, C.I. hasn't scored in three straight games. The Raiders will find the right connections here.

Santa Monica 20, Hueneme 13: If Hueneme can stay close, even win here, it would be a tremendous boost to the program, more so than last week's victory over Santa Clara.

Pacifica 13, Cabrillo/Lompoc 8: Remember fondly when Pacifica registered the first shutout in program history in its win over Lompoc last year? Tritons will need the same kind of defensive effort.

St. Bonaventure 27, Atascadero 20: With questions surrounding whether or not it deserves to be ranked among the best teams in the state, St. Bonaventure needs to reaffirm its status with an impressive outing.

Grace Brethren 21, Kilpatrick 10: With solid group of receivers, the Deuce expects Grace Brethren quarterback Kevin Ramay to throw often and far.

St. Joseph/Santa Maria 19, Nordhoff 17: Wicked opener for two programs that are usually ranked among the best in their division.

Fillmore 27, L.A. Baptist 12: After scoring a shutout in its opener, it's time to give Fillmore defense, which was ranked among county leaders throughout the 2006 season, its just due.

Oak Park 37, Cathedral 24: Expect another great season from an Oak Park program that hasn't lost to many teams other than Oaks Christian over the last four years.

Villanova 15, Desert Christian 7: Villanova is off to another great adventure. This time to Lancaster. Maybe the Villanova coach needs to have a talk to his athletic director. What you say, it's the same guy???? Oops.

Loyola 24, Thousand Oaks 16: With De La Salle on its schedule next week, will Loyola overlook the Lancers? No way. Thousand Oaks is too much of a threat to do that.

Varsity Prepares For 2007 Opener
Head Coach Todd Borowski
An air of enthusiasm surrounds the Simi Valley High School campus as the Pioneers prepare for their September 7th opener at home against Buena. Coach Todd Borowski returns a talented group of seniors who will be joined by a promising group of players moving up from JV.
The most notable returnee for the Pioneers will be senior fullback Langston Jackson who will be looked upon to lead the offense as he did in 2006 when he gained 988 yards on 200 carries with 10 touchdowns. Also returning will be center Chase Day, tight end James Barona, and wide receiver Jesse Swayze. Seniors Adam Hernandez, Chance Cross, and Joey Bernardo will also get reps at wide receiver. Notable newcomers on offense will be junior tailback Tommy Dowling, and wide receiver Keith Williams, a junior transfer from Thousand Oaks. With only one starter returning to the offensive line, seniors Jake Berry and Kyle Garrett and juniors Abel Salazar, Shawn Morrison, Kyle White, and Matt Toczynski will compete for the remaining four positions. At quarterback, juniors Jared Zahorik and Tim Ferralli have been competing for the starting nod. Ferralli started most of last year on JV after Zahorik suffered a broken leg in the second game of 2006. Also returning from the 2006 varsity squad will be junior placekicker David Castro.
On defense, the Pioneers return five starters including three very talented defensive backs. Cornerback Marcus Shelby and safeties Adam Hernandez and Chance Cross will likely be joined by junior Evan Green at the other corner position. Senior Alan Steele will return to lead the linebacking corp. Competing for the other three linebacker positions will be seniors Tyler Block, Everett Campos, and A.J. Forlizzi along with junior Tim McAnany and sophomore Denny Vigo. Senior Michael Ortiz will be a formidable force at noseguard and will anchor the defensive line. Competing for the other two spots are seniors Greg Baker and Kyle Garrett and junior David Yaftaly.
The Pioneers’ opening game opponent will be the Buena Bulldogs, led by fourth year head coach Justin Berenson. Buena, who won last year’s opener 14-13, had a season similar to the Pioneers. After a successful pre-league, the Bulldogs lost a couple close league games and finished the year 3-7. Unlike Simi, Buena will have to replace most of their key players from 2006. The Bulldogs lost their top six tacklers on defense to graduation as well as their leading rusher and passer. Among players to watch for Buena, who have historically been a run-oriented team, will be senior tailback Vince McCowan, who was the Bulldogs second leading rusher in 2006 with 417 yards on 68 carries, and sophomore tight end Tyler Perry who started eight games last year as a freshman. Senior cornerback Anthony Pelupessy, who had three interceptions in 2006, will be a key returning player on a junior dominated defense.
The opening kickoff will be Friday, September 7 at 7:00pm at home in Simi Valley. Join us in cheering the Pioneers on to victory in what promises to be a successful 2007 football season!
