Pepperdine-Santa Clara Box Score
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Between the inside play of John Bryant and the three-point shooting of Santa Clara, the visiting Pepperdine men’s basketball team suffered a 64-52 defeat in a West Coast Conference game on Saturday evening. The Waves (5-18, 2-5) are now in sixth place at the halfway point of the league season. The Broncos (11-13, 3-4) won on their home court for the fourth straight year to take over fifth place.

Coming off a 32-point performance in the win at San Francisco, freshman guard Keion Bell (Los Angeles, Calif./Pasadena HS) followed it up with a team-high 12 points. Sophomore forward Mychel Thompson (Ladera Ranch, Calif./Stoneridge Prep) scored 10 points and senior guard Ryan Holmes (Phoenix, Ariz./Millennium HS/Phoenix CC) added nine.

But Bryant finished with 19 points and 17 rebounds and the Broncos made 12 three-pointers, five by Kevin Foster (15 points), four by Calvin Johnson (12 points) and three by James Rahon (11 points). Santa Clara finished with a shooting edge of 47.8% to 37.0% from the field.

Pepperdine kept pace with Santa Clara early in the first half, as a jumper by Holmes tied the game at 11-11 with 15:42 to play. But the Broncos’ hot shooting – they made their first seven shots – helped them pull ahead. Foster’s third three-pointer of the half was Santa Clara’s sixth on seven attempts, and it gave the hosts a 27-16 lead with 8:45 to play.

Three-pointers by senior guard Rico Tucker (San Diego, Calif./University HS/Minnesota) and Bell helped Pepperdine cut the deficit to 29-24 with five minutes left, but Santa Clara went into halftime with a 33-26 lead.

After Foster’s fourth three-pointer opened the second half, Holmes scored four straight points to make the score 36-30. Foster then sank his fifth three-pointer, however, and the Waves would get no closer the rest of the way. Santa Clara’s largest lead would come at 57-38 with 8:29 left following a three-point play by Bryant. Sophomore walk-on Gus Clardy (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches HS) came off the bench to play a career-high 26 minutes and did an admirable job defensively on the much bigger Bryant. Clardy also had four points and five rebounds.

The Waves committed only 10 turnovers to the Broncos’ 16, but Santa Clara had a 35-26 rebounding edge. Of the 12 players that saw action for the Waves, nine were freshmen or sophomores and seven weren’t on the roster last year. Pepperdine’s coaches wore sneakers rather than their usual dress shoes as part of the annual “Coaches Vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Awareness Weekend”.

The Waves begin the second half of WCC play with their third straight road game next Saturday (Feb. 7) at Loyola Marymount. It’s a doubleheader with the women’s game at 4:30 p.m. and the men’s game at 7 p.m. Subscribers to “Wave Casts” at http://www.pepperdinesports.com/?DB_OEM_ID=18500 can listen to Al Epstein’s call of the action.

Final Stats
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - For most of Santa Clara's 64-52 win over Pepperdine, the Broncos were in complete control. Leading the charge against the Waves was Bronco big man, John Bryant. The San Pablo native added another milestone to his illustrious career.
Bryant became only the third player in Santa Clara history to amass 1,000 rebounds in a career. He is the 14th player in WCC and the first in the Bay Area since Tim Young of Stanford pulled down 1,000+ in 1999.
"It's an honor but I am not really focused on it," said Bryant. "It's a great honor to be one of the top rebounders in SCU history."
Santa Clara moves to 11-13 and 3-4 in the WCC, while Pepperdine falls to 5-18 and 2-5 in the WCC.
Bryant has 323 total rebounds on the year, and is the national leader. The center added his 17th double-double, second nationally only to Blake Griffin of Oklahoma with 18 double-doubles, by finishing with 19 points, and 17 rebounds.
Calvin Johnson, James Rahon, and Kevin Foster all finished in double figures. Johnson finished the game with 12 points, Rahon with 11 and Foster with 15. The trio combined to make all 12 of the Broncos three point field goals on the night - a season-high for the team.
At halftime Santa Clara led Pepperdine 33-26, and after 13:09 remaining in the second half, the lead was never less than 12. The Waves were led by Keion Bell, and Mychel Thompson, who finished the game with twelve and ten points respectively.

In the first half John Bryant scored 10 points and shot 4-5 from the field to lead the Broncos. Four of Bryant's 10 were on dunks the second of which came at 15:03. Fueled by a 8 -2 run, the Broncos extended their lead to 10 points midway through the second half, and they never looked back. Along with Bryant, Foster shot 3 of 4 from three, and James Rahon added five points on his own.

UPCOMING — Following an impressive victory at San Francisco in which Keion Bell scored 32 points, the Pepperdine men’s basketball team completes the first half of West Coast Conference play this Saturday with its contest at Santa Clara. A win would give the Waves sole possession of fifth place at the midway point. It’s the second of three straight road games, with local rival Loyola Marymount to follow next weekend. Underclassmen are dominating the young Pepperdine lineup, as freshmen and sophomores are scoring more than 86% of the points.
GAME #23 — Saturday (Jan. 31) at the Leavey Center in Santa Clara, Calif.: Pepperdine (5-17, 2-4) at Santa Clara (10-13, 2-4) at 7 p.m.
ON THE WEB — Subscribers to "Wave Casts" can catch all Pepperdine men’s basketball games on the internet at www.pepperdinesports.com. Veteran play-by-play man Al Epstein, now in his 24th season with the Waves, is behind the microphone. Non-televised home games will have live audio and video, while road games will be audio only. Go to the Pepperdine Athletics website and look for the WaveCasts link. An annual pass costs $69.95 and monthly subscriptions are also available. Live statistics will be available for all home matches free of charge, and links are provided to the home team’s website when the Waves are on the road.
COACHES VS. CANCER WEEKENDTom Asbury and his staff will be wearing sneakers rather than the usual dress shoes with their suits this weekend as part of the annual "Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Awareness Weekend." Since 1993, coaches across the country have taken part in this event to help raise the public consciousness about the fight against cancer. All eight WCC coaching staffs are slated to take part.
SANTA CLARA — Pepperdine is 52-64 all-time against Santa Clara. Over the last 10 meetings, the schools are 5-5 against each other. The Waves have won three straight at home but have lost three straight in Santa Clara. Tom Asbury went 8-5 against the Broncos in his first go-round as head coach.
LAST GAMEKeion Bell scored a career-high 32 points on 13-for-14 shooting to lead Pepperdine to its first road victory of the season and a 69-67 win at San Francisco on Thursday (Jan. 29). The Waves led nearly the entire contest and ended a six-game losing streak to USF. Bell hit his first nine shots of the game and sank all four of his three-pointers. Pepperdine built a 16-3 lead early and was ahead 31-30 at halftime. The Dons took a couple of one-point leads midway through the second half, but Bell’s three-point play with 12:33 to go put the Waves ahead to stay at 47-45. Although USF cut into Pepperdine’s lead at the end, the Dons never had a chance to tie the game or take the lead. Ryan Holmes played his best game since returning from a knee injury, getting nine points and five assists in 23 minutes.
MORE ON BELLKeion Bell’s 32 points were two shy of the Pepperdine freshman single-game record (Tyrone Shelley scored 34 last season) ... His 13-for-14 shooting was one field goal made shy of tying the school record for single-game field-goal percentage (Dana Jones went 14-for-14 in 1991) ... His four steals at USF were the most by a Pepperdine player this season ... Bell is averaging team bests of 12.3 ppg overall and 17.0 ppg in WCC play ... He has scored in double-figures in four straight games and is averaging 20.8 points in that time.
ROTATION — Among the 11 players that got into the game against San Francisco, nine were freshmen or sophomores and seven weren’t on the roster last year ... Lately, Pepperdine has been starting three freshmen, a sophomore and a senior ... Prior to that, the Waves were starting four freshmen and one sophomore for a spell ... The Waves have played five freshmen on the court at one time on an occasional basis.
BAD STARTS — The Waves ended a trend of bad starts when they jumped out to a 16-3 lead at San Francisco. They had been put in a deep hole to start the game in each of the previous four contests, falling behind by double-digits just four to six minutes in each game. The Waves fell behind 9-0 and 13-2 at San Diego, 16-1 and 28-3 at Saint Mary’s, 17-0 vs. Gonzaga and 12-2 vs. Portland.
BETTER FINISHES — The Waves have won the second half in each of the last three games, outscoring Gonzaga (43-38), Portland (35-29) and San Francisco (38-37). In fact, throw out the 17-0 deficit to Gonzaga after six minutes, and the Waves won the next 34 minutes, outscoring the Bulldogs by three. The 29 second-half points by the Pilots were the fewest by a Pepperdine opponent this season. The USF game was only the second time this season where the Waves won both the first and second half.
FRESHMAN SCORING — Last year, freshmen scored 63.6% of Pepperdine’s points. It looks like the new group of freshmen will lead the way in 2008-09 as well. Right now they account for 59.8% of the scoring, compared to 26.5% by the sophomores and 13.7% by the seniors. The two games where freshmen contributed the most (76%) were at Hawaii and vs. Portland.
SEASON NOTABLES — The win over Cal State Monterey Bay gave the Waves their first victory in a season opener since 2001-02 ... Veteran broadcaster Al Epstein called his 700th consecutive Pepperdine men’s basketball broadcast vs. Pacific on Dec. 13 ... The game at Cal State Northridge on Dec. 18 was the 2,000th in program history ... Pepperdine’s 12-game losing streak tied the third-longest in program history and was the longest since the 1965-66 season ... The Waves beat Loyola Marymount in Firestone Fieldhouse for the 11th consecutive time ... Pepperdine won its conference opener (vs. LMU) for the first time since 2005.
SOLES4SOULS — Pepperdine’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee, in conjunction with student-fan group Riptide, will be collecting shoes at Firestone Fieldhouse until Feb. 17 for Soles4Souls. Soles4Souls has already successfully donated more than one million pairs of shoes to those hurting both domestically and internationally. Fans can drop off shoes, both new and used, into the Soles4Souls collection box located near the concession stand at Firestone Fieldhouse, or among several additional boxes placed throughout Pepperdine’s Malibu campus.
ROSTER — The Waves have just five players that saw action last season. Only four of them were on the roster at season’s end, and because of injuries, only two of them played in the 2007-08 season finale at the WCC Tournament. The five returners accounted for 40.2% of last year’s scoring (950/2,365), 32.0% of the rebounding (357/1,117), 59.6% of the assists (239/401), 16.4% of the blocked shots (21/128) and 57.9% of the steals (183/316). To replenish the roster, the Waves added 10 newcomers. Two are sophomores that are junior college transfers, six are scholarship freshmen and two others are walk-on freshmen. Of the 15 players, 12 are underclassmen. The breakdown is three seniors, zero juniors, four sophomores and eight freshmen.

Like Numbers?
Ken Pomeroy of KenPom.com breaks down all kinds of numbers on his website as of Jan. 25. For example: Santa Clara is No. 20 in the country in block percentage.
Pomeroy breaks it down a lot further. Individually, John Bryant is ranked No. 1 nationally in defensive rebounding percentage and No. 4 in offensive rebounding percentage. He tops the WCC in both.
Bryant is ranked No. 4 in the country in percentage of shots taken and is No. 1 in the WCC. Bryant is No. 1 in the WCC in block percentage and No. 26 nationally. KenPom.com also breaks down Offensive Ratings as well. It's a measure of personal offensive efficiency developed by Dean Oliver. Bryant is No. 15 nationally.
Bryant Named Naismith Trophy Top 50 Finalist
Leading the country with 306 total rebounds this season, Santa Clara senior center John Bryant has been tabbed as one of the Top 50 Finalists for the Naismith Trophy. The two-week voting to name the top 30 Finalists will begin on Mon., Feb. 2. The Naismith Trophy, presented by AT&T, will be awarded at the 2009 NCAA Men's Final Four in Detroit, Mich.
On the national level, Bryant is No. 2 with 13.3 rpg, No. 12 with 2.7 bpg and No. 20 in field goal percentage (59.3%). He is averaging a double-double with 17.0 ppg and 13.3 rpg in 29.2 mpg.
Bryant is the only Bronco in school history to score 1,400+ points, gather 900+ rebounds and block 200+ shots. On the Santa Clara career list: Bryant is No. 1 in career blocks (224), No. 3 in career rebounds (991) and No. 9 in career points (1,462).
Bryant is just nine boards shy of 1,000 career rebounds. The 6' 11, 275 San Pablo, CA native is looking to become just the third player in school history and the 14th in WCC history to reach the rebounding milestone. Bryant would be the 10th player in Bay Area history to reach 1,000 career rebounds, and the first since Stanford's Tim Young accomplished the feat in 1999. Bryant needs 47 rebounds to pass No. 2 Kurt Rambis (1,037 from 1976-80) and 145 rebounds to break the school record set by Dennis Awtrey (1,135 from 1967-70).
On the career points list, Bryant needs 275 points to break Kurt Rambis' school record (1,736 point from 1976-80).
Bryant has 16 double-doubles this season and is No. 2 nationally behind Oklahoma's Nate Griffin, who has 17 (as of Jan. 30). Bryant's 16 double-doubles this year: vs. CSU East Bay, vs. UAB, at Georgia, at Montana, at San Jose State, vs. Sacramento State, at UNLV, vs. Stanford, vs. UTEP, at Harvard, vs. San Diego, at Gonzaga, at Portland, vs. USF, vs. Houston Baptist and LMU. Bryant has 39 double-doubles in his career. He notched 15 double-doubles last season, five double-doubles in 2006-07 and had four double-doubles as a freshman during the 2005-06 season.
He was the WCC Player of the Week after averaging 18 rpg, 17 ppg and 4.5 bpg on Dec. 8; and again on Jan. 26 after averaging 19 ppg, 16.5 rpg and 3.5 rpg for the week.
He has twice tied his career-high with 22 rebounds at the Leavey Center, also the facility record set by Kurt Rambis vs. Saint Mary's in a 90-73 SCU win on Feb. 5, 1977. He has seven games with 20+ rebounds. Bryant has three games this year with 20+ points and 20+ rebounds. Those games were:
At San Jose State (12/3/08): 20 points, 21 rebounds
Vs. Stanford (12/23/08): 27 points, 22 rebounds
Vs. Houston Baptist (1/25/09): 20 points, 21 rebounds
In an article that appeared on SI.COM Jan. 30, writer John Gasaway lists him as one of the stars of his All-Underrated Team. Gasaway says of Bryant:
Meet the best defensive rebounder in the country, better than Blake Griffin or DeJuan Blair. When he's on the floor, Bryant gets to 35 percent of opponents' misses. He's also a very good shot-blocker. That's enough to merit consideration for my team right there, but Bryant's also a load for opponents on offense, hitting 59 percent of his twos and dominating the offensive glass. While Bryant might be All-Underrated nationally, he's no secret in the WCC and faces constant double- and even triple-teams, making his production all the more impressive.
Young Guns
With the Broncos starting three freshmen the last few games it appears they are one of the younger teams nationally this season. True. According to Robbie Allen of STATSHEET.COM, the Broncos have the 38th youngest team in the NCAA this year of the 342 Division I teams, which means 89% of the Division I teams have a more experienced roster than the Broncos. But, SCU isn't even the youngest team in the WCC this year. Santa Clara has an average age per minute of 2.15 years while LMU is No. 2 at 2.07 (No. 24 nationally) and Pepperdine is the WCC's youngest at 1.78 (No. 8 nationally). Both SCU and LMU are slated to start three freshmen and two seniors on Thursday night.
On the flip side, also according to Allen's figures, the three oldest in the WCC: Saint Mary's with an average age per minute of 3.09 is No. 1, Gonzaga is No. 2 at 3.07 and San Diego is No. 3 at 2.73. Nationally, of the team's ranked by most experience, Saint Mary's is No. 40 (top 88%) and Gonzaga is No. 47 (top 86%).
Show No Fear
The freshmen are some of the top youngsters in the WCC. Marc Trasolini leads the WCC in all games in field goal percentage and blocked shots. In WCC games he leads freshmen in the league in field goal percentage. Kevin Foster leads all games in scoring and James Rahon leads all games and WCC games in three-point percentage.
Trashing Them
In the LMU game Kevin Foster broke the freshman school record for three pointers attempted (146) and three pointers made (54). The previous records were 51 three pointers made and 145 three pointers attempted by Brandon Rohe in 2002-03.
Look for James Rahon to also break the freshman record for threes made as he has 46 already this season (record was 51) and could break the freshman school record as he is shooting 43.4% from beyond the arc. The top three point percentage was set by Steve Nash in 1992-93 when he shot 40.8% from the three point line.
Maybe even more impressive for Foster and Rahon to be breaking the three point line records: the three point line was moved out from 19 feet, 9 inches to 20 feet, 9 inches this season.
Marc Trasolini is climbing up the rebounding and blocks freshman school record charts as well.
James Rahon has scored a career-high 25 points each of the last two games and 20+ each of the last three games. To tally 25 vs. Houston Baptist he was 6 of 12 from the field, including 5 of 9 from the arc. He was 8 of 8 from the free throw line. To tally 25 vs. LMU he was 8 of 12 from the field, including 5 of 6 from the three-point line. Rahon was 4 of 6 from the charity stripe, missing his last free throw attempt which would have given him a career-high 26 points. Rahon has made 14 three pointers in the last three games.

Santa Clara has beaten its last three opponents by 26 points each. The Broncos defeated USF 70-54, Houston Baptist 85-59 and LMU 82-56. The Broncos are 4-0 this year when they score 80+ points and 6-1 under Coach Keating in the last two years.
Team Highs
Santa Clara collected 11 blocks vs. LMU, a two-year high under Keating.
Santa Clara hit a season-high 89 points vs. UTEP and the Broncos are shooting better than 46% from the field. The Broncos are out-rebounding their opponents by 4.3 rpg, but turning the ball over 3.6 more times than their opponents. In the latest NCAA stats (Jan. 30), Santa Clara is ranked No. 318 in the nation in turnover margin.
Santa Clara had just 10 turnovers vs. Sacramento State, vs. Notre Dame de Namur and at Pacific, its lowest totals since the Broncos turned the ball over nine times vs. Saint Mary's on March 4, 2007.
The Broncos collected 48 rebounds vs. Houston Baptist, a high under head coach Kerry Keating; and the most since the Broncos grabbed 49 rebounds vs. Holy Names on Nov. 14, 2006.
Santa Clara held two straight home opponents to 14 points in the first half this year. Sacramento State scored 14 in the first half and went on to score 18 points in the second half to finish 51-32 losers to Santa Clara on Dec. 6. NDNU scored 14 points in the first half vs. Santa Clara and fell 67-47 to the Broncos on Dec. 13.
The 14 points in the first half were the fewest a team has scored vs. the Broncos since Stanford scored 12 points in the first half of a 62-46 loss to SCU, at Stanford, on Dec. 16, 2006.
All three: 20+ some
20+ is a popular number of points to score with the freshmen crew this year. Kevin Foster hit a career-best 24 vs. Belmont on Dec. 29, scoring on 8 of 17 shots (3 of 11 from three point land), collecting on 5 of 5 at the free throw line.
Foster then turned it up a notch at Saint Mary's and scored 31 points, a career best. The last Bronco freshman to score at least 25 points: senior Calvin Johnson scored 25 vs. Cal Poly on Dec. 10, 2005 during his freshman campaign. He hit 9 of 14 shots in that game, including six three-pointers. Foster has scored 20+ points six times this season, including 20 points vs. LMU.
Marc Trasolini scored a career-best 24 points at UNH, knocking down 7 of 8 shots and hitting a career-best 10 of 12 from the charity stripe. It was Trasolini's first double-double of the year.
On Jan. 23, James Rahon topped the 20 mark for the first time in his career when he scored 21 points in the win over USF. Rahon hit 7 of 14 shots, including 4 of 7 from the three point line and 3 of 4 from the free throw line. He added a career-high five assists for good measure.
Not to be out-done on Jan. 25 Rahon scored a career-high 25 points, hitting 6 of 12, including 5 of 9 from the three-point line and 8 of 8 from the free throw line.
Rahon did it again on Jan. 29 vs. LMU, scoring 25 points for the second straight game, including hitting 5 three pointers.
Only ONE Bryant!
John Bryant is working to become the first Bronco since Kurt Rambis to collect 1,000+ rebounds and just the third in school history. Dennis Awtrey holds the school record with 1,135 rebounds (1967-70) and Rambis is second with 1,037 rebounds (1976-80). Bryant has 991 career rebounds and needs just 143 to break Awtrey's school record. He is No. 9 on the all-time scoring list with 1,462 points. He needs 276 points to break Kurt Rambis' school record from 1976-80.
In single season records, he has already passed his own rebound total at No. 9, set last year when he grabbed 298 on the year.
Bryant is in a number of career top 10 lists. See below.

Bell's 32 Points Leads Waves Over USF, 69-67
Courtesy: Pepperdine Sports Information
Release: 01/29/2009

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Freshman guard Keion Bell scored a career-high 32 points on 13-for-14 shooting to lead the Pepperdine men’s basketball to its first road victory of the season and a 69-67 win over San Francisco in a West Coast Conference game on Thursday evening.

The Waves, who led nearly the entire contest, improved to 5-17 overall and 2-4 in the WCC and ended a six-game losing streak in to the Dons. It was Pepperdine’s first road win in nine tries this season and snapped a four-game overall losing streak. USF dropped to 8-13, 0-6.

Bell (Los Angeles, Calif./Pasadena HS) hit his first nine shots of the game and sank all four of his three-pointers. He added four steals and three rebounds in 27 minutes. He finished two points shy of Pepperdine's freshman record (34 by Tyrone Shelley last year) and one field goal made short of tying the school record for single-game field goal percentage (14-for-14 by Dana Jones in 1991).

“We got our hands on a lot of balls and did a solid job defensively,” Pepperdine Coach Tom Asbury said. “USF is as young as we are. But we showed some poise and grit. The last four or five minutes, that’s where we have usually had problems. But I told our guys that with all of the minutes they’ve played, they’re not freshmen anymore. We’re maturing a little bit. They hung in there. It’s great to get a road win, and it’s important to win on the road.

“Keion did a great job finishing plays. He was active tonight. He got some points on breakaways and did well finishing with an open court.” USF’s Dior Lowhorn, the WCC’s leading scorer, had 28 points and 10 rebounds.

Unlike the four previous games where the Waves fell behind early, Pepperdine got off to a terrific start in this one, holding USF without a field goal for more than 6 ½ minutes. The Waves hit six of their first seven shots, several coming in transition, and jumped out to a 16-3 lead. Bell and senior guard Ryan Holmes (Phoenix, Ariz./Millennium HS/Phoenix CC) sparked the Waves to the big start, with Bell scoring seven points and Holmes getting five along with a couple of steals and assists. The 13-point advantage has been the Waves’ largest in conference play.

The Dons started taking better care of the ball and limiting the Waves’ fast-break opportunities, however, and an 8-0 run cut Pepperdine’s lead to 18-14 with less than eight minutes to go in the first half. USF would eventually tie the game at 25-25, but the Waves would eventually go into halftime with a 31-30 lead.

Bell scored the Waves’ first seven points of the second half to improve their lead to 38-32. USF would rally, however, and take its first lead at 43-42 with 14:10 to play on Kwame Vaughn’s lay-up. After a couple of lead changes, Bell put the Waves ahead 47-45 with a three-point play with 12:33 to go. Pepperdine took a few seven-point leads, and then made it eight at 64-56 with less than four minutes to play after Bell’s fourth three-pointer of the game.

A putback by freshman forward Taylor Darby (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills HS) made it an eight-point game again at 66-58 with three minutes left, but Lowhorn hit a jumper and a three-pointer cut the deficit to 66-63 with 1:30 to go. With the shot clock winding down, sophomore forward Mychel Thompson (Ladera Ranch, Calif./Stoneridge Prep) banked in a jumper from the right side to push Pepperdine’s advantage back up to 68-63 with 54 seconds left.

USF’s Vaughn sank two free throws with 38 seconds left, but senior guard Mike Hornbuckle (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS/Azusa Pacific) made one of two free throws to make it a two-possession game again at 69-65 with 27.6 seconds left. The Dons turned the ball over, but the Waves missed the front end of a one-and-one. USF’s Manny Quezada scored on a lay-up with 3.6 seconds left to make it 69-67. Holmes took the inbounds pass and was able to dribble out the rest of the court.

Holmes played his best game since returning from a knee injury, getting nine points and five assists in 23 minutes. Darby added eight points. Of the 11 players that saw action for the Waves, nine were freshmen or sophomores and seven weren’t on the roster last year. The Waves finish up the first half of the WCC season on Saturday (Jan. 31) at Santa Clara in a 7 p.m. contest. Pepperdine Men's Basketball Game Notes

UPCOMING — The Pepperdine men’s basketball team completes the first half of West Coast Conference play this weekend with a road trip to the Bay Area to meet San Francisco and Santa Clara. It’s the first of three straight road games, with local rival Loyola Marymount to follow. The young Waves are hoping to end a four-game losing streak. Underclassmen are dominating the Pepperdine lineup, as freshmen and sophomores are scoring nearly 87% of the points.
GAME #22 — Thursday (Jan. 29) at War Memorial Gymnasium in San Francisco, Calif.: Pepperdine (4-17, 1-4) at San Francisco (8-12, 0-5) at 7 p.m.
GAME #23 — Saturday (Jan. 31) at the Leavey Center in Santa Clara, Calif.: Pepperdine at Santa Clara (9-13, 1-4) at 7 p.m.
SAN FRANCISCO — Pepperdine is 45-64 all-time against San Francisco and has lost six in a row, including three in War Memorial Gym. The last Pepperdine victory came in 2005 in San Francisco. Tom Asbury went 13-3 against the Dons in his first stint as head coach.
SANTA CLARA — Pepperdine is 52-64 all-time against Santa Clara. The Broncos swept the season series last season. Pepperdine won at Santa Clara in 2007. That was the Waves’ only win in the series in the last 10 games. Tom Asbury went 8-5 against the Broncos in his first go-round as head coach.
LAST GAME — Another slow start cost Pepperdine as the Waves lost at home to Portland, 73-58, on Saturday (Jan. 24). The Waves fell behind 12-2 after a little more than four minutes and never caught up. Pepperdine closed the gap to as few as three points, but trailed 44-23 at halftime and got no closer than 13 points in the second half. Keion Bell and Taylor Darby each scored 12 points for the Waves.
QUICK HITSKeion Bell is averaging 14.0 points in conference play and 17.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in the last three games ... Ten of Andy Shannon’s 12 blocks this season have come in the last six games, and he had four vs. Portland (most by a Pepperdine player this season) ... Mychel Thompson had his streak of five games scoring in double-figures end vs. Portland (the longest stretch by a Wave this season).
BAD STARTS — One trend that the Waves are hoping to end is that they’ve been put in a deep hole to start the game in each of the last four contests. Pepperdine has been behind by double-digits just four to six minutes in each game. The Waves fell behind 9-0 and 13-2 at San Diego, 16-1 and 28-3 at Saint Mary’s, 17-0 vs. Gonzaga and 12-2 vs. Portland.
BETTER FINISHES — The Waves outscored Gonzaga (43-38) and Portland (35-29) in the second halves of their games this past weekend. In fact, throw out the 17-0 deficit to Gonzaga after six minutes, and the Waves won the next 34 minutes, outscoring the Bulldogs by three. The 29 second-half points by the Pilots were the fewest by a Pepperdine opponent this season.
FRESHMAN SCORING — Last year, freshmen scored 63.6% of Pepperdine’s points. It looks like the new group of freshmen will lead the way in 2008-09 as well. Right now they account for 59.2% of the scoring, compared to 27.4% by the sophomores and 13.4% by the seniors. The two games where freshmen contributed the most (76%) were at Hawaii and vs. Portland.
STAT LEADERSTaylor Darby is fourth in the WCC in rebounding (7.2) and 15th in blocked shots (0.57) ... Keion Bell is sixth in steals (1.44) and free throw percentage (.757), 14th in assists (2.14) and 15th in scoring (11.4) ... Dane Suttle Jr. is eighth in three-point field goal percentage (.387) and tied for 11th in three-pointers made (1.43) ... Andy Shannon is ninth in blocked shots (0.92) ... Mychel Thompson is 16th in scoring (11.1).
AGRE OUT — Sophomore center Denis Agre, in his first season at Pepperdine after transferring from Central Arizona College, became academically ineligible at the start of the semester. He averaged 3.2 points and 3.6 rebounds and started seven of the first 16 games.
RETURNERS — Three players — senior Rico Tucker (10.7 ppg last season), sophomore Mychel Thompson (8.1 ppg) and senior Ryan Holmes (6.0 ppg) — were starters in 2007-08. Senior Mike Hornbuckle (5.5 ppg) saw extended playing time last season and started half of the 32 games. Sophomore Gus Clardy (1.3 ppg), a walk-on, appeared in 16 games last season.
NEWCOMERS — When Tom Asbury was hired in February 2008, he was given a very late start to the recruiting process. The three recruits that signed letters-of-intent with the previous coaching staff were given their release, and several players transferred following the season. With many holes to fill, Asbury and his staff utilized their contacts, identified the best of the remaining unsigned talent that fit their needs and put together a very impressive group under the circumstances. The Sporting News ranked Pepperdine’s recruiting class #2 in the West Coast Conference.
NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE — The home schedule should have been much more palatable to Waves fans in 2008-09. A year after playing just three non-conference home games, Pepperdine supporters were treated to eight this time around, including ones against such big-time opponents as Brigham Young and Georgia Tech, and in-state rivals such as Cal State Bakersfield, UC Irvine and Pacific. A few of the road games were notable too, including contests at Pac-10 foes Arizona State and USC. The Waves also took part in the Rainbow Classic in Hawaii right after Christmas.
TELEVISION — The Waves will appear on television several times once again in 2008-09. Six games will be shown locally (Nov. 21 at Arizona State on FSN Prime Ticket, Jan. 10 vs. Loyola Marymount on ESPNU, Jan. 22 vs. Gonzaga on FSN West, Feb. 14 vs. San Diego on FSN West, Feb. 21 at Gonzaga on ESPNU and Feb. 26 vs. Saint Mary’s on FSN West). A few other games will be televised out of market (Nov. 21 at New Mexico State on FSN Arizona, Dec. 28 vs. Buffalo on KFVE in Hawaii, Jan. 17 at Saint Mary’s on Comcast Sports Net California).
GAME #21, WCC GAME #6 - SCOUTING PEPPERDINE: The Waves enter the fourth week of West Coast Conference play with an 4-17 overall record and a 1-4 mark in league action. Pepperdine enters its game with USF on a four-game losing streak and is winless on the road this season at 0-8. The Waves average 62.9 points on .391 shooting, including a .320 clip from beyond the arc, to go along with 35.8 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Keion Bell keys Pepperdine at both ends of the floor, averaging 11.4 points and 2.1 assists. Sophomore forward Mychel Thompson chips in 11.1 points and 3.4 rebounds, while freshman forward Taylor Darby adds 6.3 points with a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game. Coaching veteran Tom Asbury is at the midway point of his seventh overall season and second stint with the Waves. Asbury previously guided Pepperdine for six seasons and propelled the Waves to five postseason trips and three WCC titles while posting a 66-18 record from 1989-94. Asbury then spent five seasons as the head coach at Kansas State (1995-00) and was an assistant at Alabama from 2004-07.

FACTS & STATS: Site: War Memorial Gymnasium (5,300) -- San Francisco, California. Television:None. Home Record: Pepperdine 3-8, USF 5-20. Away Record: Pepperdine 0-8, USF 2-10. Neutral Record: Pepperdine 1-1, USF 1-0. Conference Record: Pepperdine 1-4, USF 0-5. Series Record: San Francisco leads, 64-45.
GAME NOTES: The Pepperdine Waves get a three-game road trip started tonight, as they square off against the San Francisco Dons in West Coast Conference play at War Memorial Gymnasium. The Waves have had no success in true road games this season, going winless at 0-8. Overall, Pepperdine sits a dismal 4-17 and it brings a four-game losing streak into tonight's bout. Most recently, the Waves were defeated by the University of Portland, 73-58, on Saturday, dropping them to just 1-4 in conference play. As for the Dons, they own an even worse record n the WCC, having gone 0-5 thus far. The team is currently riding a five-game slide and that includes a 70-54 setback at Santa Clara on Friday. Now at just 8-12 overall, USF returns back home, where it has gone 5-2 following two straight losses. The Dons lead the head-to-head series with Pepperdine, 64-45, and they have won the last six meetings.
The Waves are turning the ball over 17.3 times per game and are shooting a sub par 39.1 percent from the floor and those are two big reasons for their struggles this season. Keion Bell tops the roster in scoring at 11.4 ppg, but he has also committed a whopping 86 turnovers on the campaign. Mychel Thompson nips at his heels with 11.1 ppg and he is a 36.1 percent three-point shooter. In the team's last game, Pepperdine committed 16 turnovers and shot only 39.0 percent from the field in a loss to Portland. Taylor Darby and Bell each scored 12 points to pace the team and they also combined for 12 rebounds.
The Dons are generating 67.5 ppg on the season, but in conference play, they are scoring a mere 53.8 ppg and shooting a dismal 35.7 percent from the floor. Dior Lowhorn, though, has been consistent throughout the season and he heads the squad in scoring (19.8 ppg) as well as rebounding (6.0 rpg). Manny Quezada chips in with 10.8 ppg and he has been in charge of feeding Lowhorn, dishing out a team-best 3.1 apg. In the club's prior outing, USF shot a horrific 32.1 percent from the field, including a poor 6-of-23 showing from downtown, as it was downed by Santa Clara. Kwame Vaughn guided the club in the setback with 14 points, while Lowhorn had 13 points.
USF has struggled greatly of late, but with the crowd behind it tonight and a big game from Lowhorn, the Dons should be able to get the job done against a young Pepperdine squad.
Predicted Outcome
San Francisco 72, Pepperdine 62

Pepperdine 69, San Francisco 67
Updated: January 30, 2009, 12:37 AM EST

FRANCISCO (AP) - Freshman guard Keion Bell set a new career-high Thursday night with 32 points to lead Pepperdine to a 69-67 victory over host San Francisco, the Waves' first win over the Dons in almost four years.
Bell hit 13 of 14 shots from the field, including all four 3-pointers, and grabbed three rebounds. Ryan Holmes added nine points and five assists for the Waves (5-17, 2-4 WCC), who snapped a four-game losing streak. Pepperdine had last beaten USF on Feb. 3, 2005.
A season-high 28 points and 10 rebounds from Dion Lowhorn, the WCC's leading scorer, were not enough to prevent the Dons (8-13, 0-6) from suffering their sixth straight loss, all in conference play.
Pepperdine jumped to a 16-3 lead as USF went 0-for-4 from the floor with four turnovers in its first 10 possessions. The Waves got four easy layups and dunks during the run, which included seven points from Bell.
The Dons slowly clawed back with solid man-to-man defense and managed to tie the score at 25 when Blake Wallace canned a jumper with 2:41 left in the half. Lowhorn had 12 points before intermission to drive the comeback.
A driving layup by Kwame Vaughn at the 14:10 mark put USF up 43-42, the Dons' first lead since the opening minute. The teams proceeded to trade the lead three more times in rapid succession before Pepperdine went on a 9-1 run.
The Waves' aggressive defense, which constantly double-teamed Lowhorn in the paint, forced USF away from their star for a time. But the junior popped outside for a 3-pointer at the 1:30 mark to finally get the Dons within three points, at 66-63.
Pepperdine responded with an 11-foot right baseline jumper from Mychel Thompson with 1 second remaining on the shot clock, and then held on despite missing two of three free throws in the final 27.6 seconds.

Pepperdine-San Francisco Box Score
MALIBU, Calif. – All seven Pepperdine men’s basketball players that saw action scored in double-figures, but that wasn’t enough to stop San Francisco interim coach Eddie Sutton from recording his 800th career victory as the Dons beat the Waves, 85-82, on Saturday night in a West Coast Conference game at Firestone Fieldhouse.

The Waves (7-15, 1-5) held a 19-point lead early in the second half, but the Dons (6-15, 2-4) battled back and Danny Cavic’s three-pointer gave USF an 83-82 lead with 14.9 seconds to play. Pepperdine missed three-point attempts on each of its final two possessions, including one at the buzzer.

Freshman guard Tyrone Shelley (San Diego, Calif./Crawford HS) had 16 points and seven rebounds to lead Pepperdine. Junior guard Ryan Holmes (Phoenix, Ariz./Millennium HS/Phoenix CC) and freshman forward Malcolm Thomas (San Diego, Calif./Crawford HS) each scored 12 points. Freshman guards Jon Reed (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Peninsula HS) and Mychel Thompson (Ladera Ranch, Calif./Stoneridge Prep) each scored 11 points. Juniors guards Mike Hornbuckle (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS/Azusa Pacific) and Rico Tucker (San Diego, Calif./University HS/Minnesota) each had 10 points.

Thompson narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

The Waves dressed only nine players (none of the nine saw action with Pepperdine last season) and only seven got into the game.

Pepperdine led by as many as 15 points in the first half at 32-17 and went into the break with a 42-30 lead. After back-to-back three-pointers by Shelley and Thompson, the Waves took a 53-34 lead with 17:15 left in the game.

USF’s Dior Lowhorn took over from there, scoring 22 of his game-high 28 points in the final 16 ½ minutes. His lay-up tied the game for the first time since it began at 77-77 with 4:08 to play, and the Dons took their first lead at 78-77 after a Christian Hernandez free throw with 3:03 to play.

Tied 80-80, a driving lay-up by Tucker gave Pepperdine its final lead at 82-80 with 1:13 left, but Cavic’s three-pointer put USF in front for good. Cavic scored 23 points in the game. After a Pepperdine miss, Hernandez hit two more free throws with 2.8 seconds left. The Waves had a good look on their final three-point shot but it was just a bit off.

There were three ties and five lead changes, all in the final five minutes.

Pepperdine slightly outshot the Dons, 49.2% to 47.8%, but USF hit 61.8% of its shots in the second half (21-for-34).

Portland 73, Pepperdine 58: Pilots match best start in WCC play by beating Waves
by Heather Gripp, Special to The Oregonian
Saturday January 24, 2009, 11:36 PM

Nik Raivio isn't used to feeling this optimistic heading into a stretch of the schedule that features two nationally ranked teams and another that qualified for last season's NCAA Tournament. The streak the Portland men's basketball team is currently enjoying isn't familiar.
Led by a game-high 20 points from Raivio, Portland defeated Pepperdine 73-58 Saturday at Firestone Fieldhouse to give the Pilots (13-7, 4-1) their fourth consecutive victory and match their best start in West Coast Conference play.
Portland's 4-1 WCC record surpasses last season's conference win total and marks the best start since the 1997-98 season, the last in which the Pilots posted a .500 conference record. "It's just been fun," said Raivio, a junior guard who is among nine returning lettermen. "We've been playing hard and having fun. More fun than last year.

"I think a whole year of experience helps a lot. The addition of T.J. (Campbell) helps a lot too. We're doing a better job of distributing. ...
"The next three games will be tough, but we'll be prepared."
Campbell, the junior college transfer who entered the game ranked second in the conference in assists, contributed 11 points, three assists and five rebounds against the Waves (4-17, 1-4). Teammate Jared Stohl added 13 points.
Raivio's nine rebounds and four assists were both game highs, but left him just shy of his second consecutive double double.

"The guys are just looking for me and getting me the ball," he said. "I haven't been doing anything different. We're just having a nice run."
Portland never trailed against a Pepperdine lineup that started three freshmen and served as a nice tuneup opportunity before the Pilots head home for consecutive games against San Diego, Saint Mary's and Gonzaga.
"We took care of business," Portland coach Eric Reveno said. "Now we have to see how we stack up against the top three."
The defense that has been a key turning point to the Pilots' success was solid again Saturday and set the tone by holding Pepperdine scoreless until nearly three minutes into the game. Sixteen Pepperdine turnovers led to 19 points for Portland.
The Waves, who trailed by 10 just four minutes into the game, closed within 19-16 on a dunk by Andy Shannon with 9:05 remaining in the first half, but the Pilots quickly pulled away with a 14-2 run.
Portland led by as many as 22 during the first half and held a 44-23 halftime lead. Raivio scored 16 of his points during a first half in which the Pilots shot 52 percent from the field.
Pepperdine had a 10-point run in the first five minutes of the second half against several Portland reserves, but the Pilots' lead was never cut to less than 13.
Freshmen Darby Taylor and Keion Bell finished as Pepperdine's leading scorers with 12 points each.
"They've got our respect as a team that battles and can do some things," Reveno said. "So we knew they weren't going anywhere. We couldn't let up."

MALIBU, Calif. — Another slow start cost the Pepperdine men’s basketball team as the Waves lost at home to Portland, 73-58, in a West Coast Conference game on Saturday afternoon.
The Waves (4-17, 1-4) fell behind 12-2 after a little more than four minutes, and never caught up. The Pilots (13-7, 4-1) won in Firestone Fieldhouse for the fourth straight time.

Freshman guard Keion Bell (Los Angeles, Calif./Pasadena HS) and freshman forward Taylor Darby (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills HS) each scored 12 points to lead the Waves, and Darby had a team-high seven rebounds. Three Pilots reached double-figures in scoring, led by Nik Raivio, who had 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals.

For the fourth straight game (all losses), the Waves fell behind by double-digits early. After trailing 12-2, Pepperdine scored the next six points to cut the deficit to 12-8, and eventually got as close as three points, last at 21-18 with 8:25 left after sophomore forward Mychel Thompson (Ladera Ranch, Calif./Stoneridge Prep) drove in for a lay-up.

Portland controlled the rest of the half, however, as Raivio scored the game’s next seven points (he had 16 in the first half) and the Pilots went on a 23-5 run to go into halftime with a 44-23 advantage. A great deal of Portland’s first-half lead was built at the free throw line, as they went 13-for-17 compared to 1-for-3 by Pepperdine.

The Pilots scored the first basket of the second half, but Darby scored eight points during a 10-0 Pepperdine run to close the gap to 46-33 with 15 minutes left. That would be as close as the Waves would get in the second half, however. Robin Smeulders sank two free throws to make the score 63-42 with 9:11 to play, and his lay-up with 5:45 left made the score 70-49.

The Waves finished with more made field goals (23-22), but the Pilots had advantages with three-pointers made (eight to two) and free throws made (21-for-31 to 10-for-15). Portland had a slight edge in shooting, 40.7% to 39.0%. Rebounding figures were also close, with Portland grabbing a 40-37 advantage, but more importantly, had an 18-8 edge in second-chance points.

Of the 12 players that saw action for the Waves, nine were freshmen or sophomores and seven weren’t on the roster last year.

The Waves finish up the first half of the WCC season on the road next weekend with games at San Francisco (Thursday, Jan. 29) and Santa Clara (Saturday, Jan. 31). Subscribers to “Wave Casts” at http://www.pepperdinesports.com/?SPSID=90183&SPID=10851&DB_OEM_ID=18500 can listen to Al Epstein’s call of the action.

Preview Box Score Recap
Jan 17, 10:22 pm EST

MORAGA, Calif. (AP)—Diamon Simpson scored a season-high 24 points and Saint Mary’s ran its winning streak to a school-record 14 games with a 96-46 victory over Pepperdine on Saturday.
The Gaels own the second-longest winning streak in NCAA Division I men’s basketball behind Wake Forest’s 16 victories. Saint Mary’s previous school-record of 13 consecutive wins was set during the 1958-59 season. The Gaels 17-1 record (4-0 in West Coast Conference) is the best start in school history.
Simpson made seven of his nine shots from the field and was 10-of-11 on free throws as the Gaels’ 50-point win tied for the eighth-largest margin of victory in school history. Carlin Hughes scored a season-high 16 points and eight assists with no turnovers. Patrick Mills added 13 points, a career-high nine assists and four steals.
Keion Bell scored 20 points to lead Pepperdine (4-15, 1-2). Mychel Thompson added 11 points. Saint Mary’s 10th win in its past 11 meetings against Pepperdine was never in doubt. The Gaels return four starters of their NCAA Tournament team from a year ago, while Pepperdine starts four freshmen and a sophomore.
Hughes hit three 3-pointers in the first seven minutes as Saint Mary’s raced to a 28-3 lead over the Waves. Pepperdine made one of its first 10 shots from the floor. The Waves responded with 12 unanswered points to pull within 13 points with five minutes remaining in the first half.
But Clint Steindl ignited another Saint Mary’s burst with six points during an 11-2 run to bump the Gaels lead back to 22 points. Saint Mary’s led 42-21 at halftime.
Simpson scored 12 of the Gaels’ first 14 points of the second half. Saint Mary’s biggest lead of the game was 54 points with 1:42 remaining in the game.
The Gaels, who improved to 8-0 at home, will now hit the road for their biggest WCC challenges. On Thursday, Saint Mary’s travels to San Diego, where it lost two games last season. Then, the Gaels face Gonzaga in a Jan. 29 showdown.

USD MEN'S BASKETBALL: Toreros have turned tables on Waves
Toreros win ninth in row over Pepperdine, fifth straight overall
By TOM SHANAHAN - For the North County Times
Thursday, January 15, 2009 10:22 PM PST

SAN DIEGO ---- This isn't the same West Coast Conference that Tom Asbury dominated during his first stint as Pepperdine men's basketball coach from 1989-1994.And the same could be said of what he recalls of facing the University of San Diego after the Toreros rode the Waves to a 62-47 win Thursday in a WCC game before 2,551 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion."It's been 15 years, so it should have changed a lot since then," said Asbury, who is in the first year of his second stint in Malibu. "USD is a much better program, and this building is a big reason why."Asbury, who left Pepperdine to take over at Kansas State (1995-2000), was referring to the 5,100-seat arena that has been home to two NCAA tournament teams since it opened in the 2002-03 season. In Asbury's six seasons at Pepperdine, his teams were 13-1 against USD, won three conference titles, and advanced to the postseason five times (three trips to the NCAA tournament and two to the NIT).
But now it's USD (11-7) riding high with a nine-game winning streak against Pepperdine and off to its first 3-0 start in 30 seasons of WCC play. USD opened the conference schedule last week with wins at San Francisco and Santa Clara."I was concerned about a letdown after two tough road wins," USD coach Bill Grier said. "I wasn't happy with the way we rebounded, but for the most part I was happy with our approach. We defended well, making them take tough shots. We could have been more efficient offensively, but we did shoot almost 50 percent (48.9, 23-of-47), so I guess I'm splitting hairs."That can happen when you're coaching a veteran team coming off an NCAA tournament season and that has won a season-best five straight games and seven of eight.Sophomore point guard Trumaine Johnson (16 points, four assists) is a big reason for the streak. USD has won five of six since he returned to the lineup from an eight-game suspension and Grier's decision not to play him in his first four games back.Pepperdine (4-13, 1-1 WCC) started four freshmen, including Mission Hills High alum Taylor Darby, and one sophomore ----
forward Mychel Thompson, the son of the former NBA player.
Thompson led the Waves with 15 points.Darby, who finished with five points and two rebounds, started for the 17th time in 18 games this year. The 6-foot-7, 210-pounder entered averaging 6.4 points and 7.6 rebounds, with his rebounding mark ranked fourth in the WCC."He didn't play well tonight, but he's been a pleasant surprise for us," Asbury said. "That was probably his poorest game of the year. That happens sometimes when guys come home and they try too hard. But he's going to be a good player for us."Another reason might have been the inside presence of Gyno Pomare, the Toreros' 6-8, 240-pound senior forward/center, who finished with 14 points and six rebounds.

West Coast Statement
Four teams entered Thursday night's action undefeated in West Coast Conference play. Not surprisingly, these were the three teams who made the NCAA Tournament a season ago: Gonzaga, St. Mary's, and San Diego.
In a nationally televised game, No. 22-ranked St. Mary's traveled to San Diego on Thursday night.
The Gaels did their best to show the country that their now 18-1 mark on the season is no fluke. They destroyed San Diego on San Diego's home floor by a score of 65-42. St. Mary's defense allowed just 14 points by San Diego in the first half.
Following the loss of Wake Forest on Wednesday night, St. Mary's now possesses the nation's longest winning streak, currently at 15 games.
Gonzaga looked impressive in their game as well, defeating Pepperdine 83-69. But in comparison, St. Mary's defeated Pepperdine by 50 in their last game.
St. Mary's and Gonzaga will meet next Thursday night in Spokane, WA.

UPCOMING — The rapidly improving Pepperdine men’s basketball team has won three of its last four games after a rough start, including a victory over local rival Loyola Marymount to start West Coast Conference play. The Waves must now take one of their most challenging WCC road swings, going down and up the state with contests at San Diego and Saint Mary’s, a pair of NCAA Tournament teams from last season. Underclassmen are dominating the young Pepperdine lineup, as freshmen and sophomores are scoring more than 86% of the points.
GAME #18 — Thursday (Jan. 15) at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego, Calif.: Pepperdine (4-13, 1-0) at San Diego (10-7, 2-0) at 7 p.m.
GAME #19 — Saturday (Jan. 17) at McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, Calif.: Pepperdine at Saint Mary’s (15-1, 2-0) at 5 p.m. The Gaels are ranked #25 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll.
ON TELEVISION — The Waves’ game at Saint Mary’s will be shown on Comcast SportsNet California. Greg Papa and Dan Belluomini are the announcers.
SAN DIEGO — Pepperdine is 52-31 all-time against San Diego. However, the Toreros have won eight straight in the series and five consecutive in San Diego. USD has ended Pepperdine’s season at the WCC Tournament in each of the last three seasons.
Tom Asbury went 13-1 against San Diego in his first stint as head coach.
SAINT MARY’S — Pepperdine is 68-50 all-time against Saint Mary’s. The Gaels have won nine of the last 10 games. The lone Pepperdine win in that stretch was in Moraga in 2007.
Tom Asbury is 15-1 against Saint Mary’s (14-1 as Pepperdine’s head coach).
LAST GAME — Pepperdine continued its home-court dominance of local rival Loyola Marymount as the Waves pulled off a 59-57 win on Saturday (Jan. 10) in a game televised by ESPNU. It was the Waves’ 11th straight home win over the Lions, and their 21st in the last 23 meetings overall.
Keion Bell scored a team-high 15 points and Mychel Thompson and Dane Suttle Jr. each scored 12. Pepperdine led 38-27 early in the second half but went scoreless for eight minutes and LMU claimed a 42-38 advantage. The Waves took the lead back for good with a 7-0 run and later held LMU scoreless for five minutes to take a nine-point lead in the final minute of play.
ROTATION — Among the 10 players that got into the game against Loyola Marymount, seven were freshmen or sophomores and six weren’t on the roster last year ... Pepperdine has been starting four freshmen and one sophomore, and has played five freshmen on the court at one time on an occasional basis.
FRESHMAN SCORING — Last year, freshmen scored 63.6% of Pepperdine’s points. It looks like the new group of freshmen will lead the way in 2008-09 as well. Right now they account for 58.7% of the scoring, compared to 27.5% by the sophomores and 13.8% by the seniors.
QUICK HITS — Pepperdine has led at halftime in each of the last five games. The Waves led at the half in only three of the first 12 games of the season ... The Waves are shooting 78% from the foul line in their victories, 68% from the line in their losses ... Pepperdine’s shooting from the field has risen in three straight games ...
Dane Suttle Jr. is averaging 12.0 ppg in the last four games ... Lorne Jackson had 15 assists in the first 13 games, then has had 16 in the last four ... Taylor Darby is averaging 9.8 rebounds over the last five games.
INJURY UPDATE — Senior point guard
Ryan Holmes suffered a sprained knee two minutes into the New Mexico State game on Nov. 21 and missed 12 straight games. He was attempting a lay-up but an Aggie player landed on him. One of just three upperclassmen on the squad, the absence of Holmes’ experience and steady point guard play was felt by the young Waves. He returned to the floor on Jan. 10 vs. Loyola Marymount and played eight minutes. ... Sophomore forward Jonathan Dupre' suffered a sprained ankle against Georgia Tech on Dec. 20 and has not played in the last five games.
AGRE OUT — Sophomore center
Denis Agre, in his first season at Pepperdine after transferring from Central Arizona College, is academically ineligible for the remainder of the season. He averaged 3.2 points and 3.6 rebounds and started seven of the first 16 games.
STAT LEADERS
Taylor Darby is fourth in the WCC in rebounding (7.6) ... Keion Bell is tied for fifth in steals (1.47), sixth in free throw percentage (.766) and 18th in scoring (10.8) ... Dane Suttle Jr. is fifth in three-point field goal percentage (.426) and three-pointers made (1.71) ... Rico Tucker is 11th in assists (2.47) ... Mychel Thompson is 15th in scoring (11.1).
RETURNERS — Three players — senior
Rico Tucker (10.7 ppg last season), sophomore Mychel Thompson (8.1 ppg) and senior Ryan Holmes (6.0 ppg) — were starters in 2007-08. Senior Mike Hornbuckle (5.5 ppg) saw extended playing time last season and started half of the 32 games. Sophomore Gus Clardy (1.3 ppg), a walk-on, appeared in 16 games last season.
NEWCOMERS — When
Tom Asbury was hired in February, he was given a very late start to the recruiting process.
17 at Saint Mary’s on Comcast Sports Net California

COACH GRIER (2ND YEAR): Coach
Bill Grier (Oregon, 1990), 45, is in his second season at the helm of the USD program... He enters the Pepperdine game with a career record of 32-21(.604)... In his rookie year he guided the Toreros to an overall mark of 22-14 and 3rd place finish in the WCC race at 11-3... He guided the Toreros to three wins and the championship title at the WCC Tournament (hosted by USD) with wins over Pepperdine, Saint Mary's and No. 20 Gonzaga... The Toreros then upset No. 15 UCONN in the NCAA Tournament opener with a 70-69 overtime victory, before falling to Western Kentucky in the second round... His 11 WCC wins were the second most for league wins in a single season in program history... Hired on March 26, 2007, Grier is USD's 11th head coach overall and just the 4th head coach since the Torero program moved to the NCAA Division I ranks in 1979-80... His 22 wins were also the most by a Torero coach in his first season at USD - previous mark was 16 held by Hank Egan ('84-85) and Jim Brovelli ('73-74). In addition to knocking off Kentucky on the road, 81-72, the Toreros earned three wins over Top-25 teams: #21 Saint Mary's, #20 Gonzaga and #15 Connecticut... Prior to USD Grier spent 16 years at Gonzaga, including the last 8 seasons as Mark Few's top assistant. Bill and his wife, Nicole, have one daughter, Giselle.
TOREROS EARN COMEBACK WIN OVER SANTA CLARA, 55-50 (Jan. 11th): The USD Toreros earned a 55-50 come-from-behind victory at Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon to improve their season mark to 10-7 overall, and 2-0 in the WCC Standings. For the second straight contest the USD defense stepped up and held its opponent to 50 points. Unlike its 65-50 win over USF where San Diego shot 57% and canned 8-of-16 threes, the Toreros struggled offensively against the always hard-nosed Broncos. Senior
Gyno Pomare battled SCU's big man John Bryant for most of the contest - Pomare finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds; Bryant totaled 19 points and 12 boards. Rob Jones finished strong down the stretch and chipped in with 17 points. The Toreros found themselves down 48-45 with 1:41 to go. Jones cut it to one at 48-47 on a lay-up with 1:18 left. With :38 ticks left, Trumaine Johnson was called for a foul against Perry Petty, but on the same play Petty was called for a technical foul in response to an elbow to Johnson. USD's Pomare canned both technical shots, and Petty converted both of his charities at his end of the floor. With SCU holding onto a 51-50 advantage, Johnson connected on a driving push-shot inside the key with :30 seconds to go. Bronco guard Kevin Foster turned the ball over and after Matt Dorr retrieved the loose ball, was fouled by Ben Dowdell. Dorr made both of his free throws for a 53-50 lead with :14 seconds to go. The game ended with Jones canning two charities with :01 left for the five point victory. USD scored a season-low 17 points in the first half.
TORERO DEFENSE STOPS USF DONS, 65-50 (Jan. 9th): The USD Toreros won their third straight game with a strong defensive showing in earning a 65-50 WCC victory over the USF Dons on Friday... San Diego held USF, which entered the game averaging 72.1 ppg, to 25 points in each half... The Toreros also helped themselves by making six of their first seven three-point attempts in charging out to a 28-13 lead before settling for a 34--25 halftime advantage... Sophomore point guard
Trumaine Johnson matched his career-high of 22 points as he connected on 8-of-12 shots overall and 4-of-6 beyond the three-point arc... Gyno Pomare chipped in with his third double-double of the season finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds... Sophomore Rob Jones, back playing in his hometown, added 10 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists... In the first half the Toreros held the WCC's leading scorer, Dior Lowhorn, to just 4 points - he would go on to finish with a team-high 18 points and 7 rebounds... For the game USD shot 57.8% from the field (26-45) and an even 50% from three-point range (8-16).
TORERO TIDBITS: The Toreros, who enter the week with a 10-7 mark and season-best four-game winning streak, have also won six of seven... In its current 4-game streak which began with an impressive 64-61 overtime road victory over Mississippi State, three Toreros are averaging in double-digits -
Gyno Pomare (15.0 ppg; 9.8 rpg), Trumaine Johnson (14.5 ppg), and Rob Jones (12.0 ppg; 6.0 rpg)... The Toreros also own a +8.2 scoring margin over the past four games (66.0 ppg to 57.8 ppg)... The same three players have led USD over the past seven games with USD winning six - Pomare (16.1 ppg; 8.6 rpg), Johnson (14.8 ppg) and Jones (13.3 ppg; 5.4 rpg)... Thursday's game against Pepperdine is the first of three straight at the JCP where the Toreros own a 4-3 record... Once again the trio of Pomare (14.7 ppg), Johnson (14.0 ppg) and Jones (12.7 ppg) pace the offensive efforts at home... In home games USD owns a scoring margin of +11.1 (69.1 ppg to 58.0 ppg)... USD's three home losses are by a combined 10 points (56-52 to San Jose State; 57-54 to New Mexico; 75-72 to Boise State)... In WCC openers that have been played at the Jenny Craig Pavilion, USD owns a record of 4-4... Pepperdine beats Loyola Marymount, 59-57
Preview Box Score Recap
Jan 11, 1:20 am EST

MALIBU, Calif. (AP)—Keion Bell scored 14 points and Pepperdine held off a late rally by Loyola Marymount, for a 59-57 victory in both team’s West Coast Conference opener on Saturday night.
The two evenly matched teams traded the lead 12 times and shot similar percentages with Pepperdine making 36.4 percent of its field goals compared to Loyola Marymount’s 35.5 percent.
Dane Suttle and Mychel Thompson added 12 points each for Pepperdine (4-14, 1-0 WCC) which won its second straight game.
The Lions pulled as close as 47-46 when LaRon Armstead scored on a layup, but Pepperdine answered with a 7-0 run capped by Mike Hornbuckle’s jumper to regain control.
But trailing 57-48 with less than a minute remaining, the Lions forced a few turnovers for a 6-1 run. Armstead nailed a 3-pointer from about mid-court before the shot clock expired for Loyola Marymount’s final two points.
Loyola Marymount erased a 9-point halftime deficit by out-scoring Pepperdine 15-2 to start the second half to take a 42-38 lead.
A pair of freshman led the depleted Lions, who are down to seven scholarship players. Jarred DuBois had 17 points and Armstead 16 points and seven rebounds for Loyola Marymount (1-16, 0-1).
Tied 21-all, Pepperdine out-scored Loyola Marymount 15-6 in the final six minutes of the first half to take a 36-27 lead at the break.

Getting Inside
Sometimes teams get the biggest boost from the schedule.
Pepperdine floundered for most of the non-conference season, looking like a team that could finish last in the conference or, worse, lose its will to compete.
Then came a trip to Hawaii and some games the Waves could win. As of Jan. 13, the Waves had won three of their past four games and had been competitive in each of their last five.
That includes a victory in the conference opener against Loyola Marymount, making the Waves 1-0 heading into the second weekend of conference play. It gives the appearance that Tom Asbury is making great strides with his young team, and the Waves are getting better.

However, the hopes resulting from that success should be tempered by the quality of the team’s victims, including Loyola Marymount, which came into its conference opener against Pepperdine with a 1-15 record and nearly beat the Waves on Pepperdine’s home court.
The Lions outscored Pepperdine 15-2 to open the second half to take a four-point lead, and that should not happen to the Waves on their home court. But Loyola Marymount, with its youth and thin bench, wilted down the stretch, which is when the Waves regrouped and played pretty well.
The Waves’ two previous wins came against Coppin State, which is 2-13, and Western Oregon, a Division II school. The stretch of success should give some much-needed confidence to a young team that needs as much as it can get. Holding Western Oregon and Loyola Marymount both under 36 percent shooting might give the Waves some sense of a defensive identity as well.
Whether the wins initiated any momentum will be apparent soon enough, because the Waves play their next two games, Jan. 15 and 17, on the road, against two of the conference’s best teams—St. Mary’s and San Diego.
Notes, Quotes
• With its Jan. 10 victory, Pepperdine has won 11 straight home games against Southern California rival Loyola Marymount, and it has beaten the Lions in 21 of their past 23 meetings overall.
• Pepperdine missed 10 straight shots from the field early in the second half against Loyola Marymount and went scoreless for more than eight minutes. Yet the Waves still won the game.
• Rebounding continued to be a problem for Pepperdine in its Jan. 10 game against Loyola Marymount. The Lions collected 11 offensive rebounds and had 17 second-chance points compared with just two second-chance points for the Waves.
Quote To Note: “Young teams have to figure out how to win. It’s real easy to lose.”—Pepperdine coach Tom Asbury.
Strategy And Personnel
Eleven players have started games for the Waves this season, and all 11 average more than 15 minutes a game. Tom Asbury might continue to mix and match combinations the rest of the year, or at least until Ryan Holmes and Jonathan Dupre return. It prevents the Waves from gaining continuity, but it may give Asbury a better idea of what he has for the coming seasons.
Player Rotation: Usual Starters—G Dane Suttle Jr., G Lorne Jackson, F Taylor Darby, C Corbin Moore, F Mychel Thompson. Key subs—G Keion Bell, G Ron Holmes, F Jonathan Dupre, F Denis Agre, G Michael Hornbuckle.
Game Review:
Hawaii 78, Pepperdine 70
Pepperdine 77, Western Oregon 67
Pepperdine 59, Loyola Marymount 57
Game Preview:
at San Diego, Thursday, Jan. 15
at St. Mary’s, Saturday, Jan. 17
vs. Gonzaga, Thursday, Jan. 22
vs. Portland, Saturday, Jan. 24
In Focus: If the Waves can start well against San Diego, the momentum from their previous two outings could keep them in the game. And staying close should be the goal at this point, because it could give the inexperienced Waves a chance to steal a game at the end if everything falls into place. The Waves’ biggest challenge will be trying to control San Diego’s Gyno Pomare inside.
Roster Report:
• Senior Ryan Holmes, who had missed eight games with a sprained knee, returned for the Jan. 10 game against Loyola Marymount and played eight minutes. His playing time should increase in the games against Santa Clara and St. Mary’s.
• As of Jan. 13, freshman Jonathan Dupre had missed five straight games with a sprained ankle. It’s uncertain whether he will play against San Diego on Jan. 15.
• Sophomore Mychel Thompson is not a consistent scorer yet, but he’s getting closer, averaging 14.3 points over his last six games, as of Jan. 13, including two games of 20 or more.

The duo shot 9-for-16 from the field, while the rest of the team went 10-for-38 and no one else had more than five points. CAL FOOTBALL - SAME TIME NEXT YEAR!

WCC - CONFERENCE GAMES BEGIN!!!

Loyola Marymount (1-15) at Pepperdine (3-13)
By - The Sports Network

GAME NOTES: Winners of 10 straight at home in the series against Loyola Marymount, the Pepperdine Waves try to maintain that momentum as they entertain the Lions in a West Coast Conference bout in Malibu tonight. Pepperdine has had a disappointing season thus far with a mere three wins in 16 tries. However, the team has picked up two victories in the last three games, thanks to a 77-67 triumph over Western Oregon a week ago at home. During the Rainbow Classic in Hawaii the team also posted a narrow 58-56 win against Coppin State.
As for the Lions, a team that had lost 15 in a row to begin this season and 23 straight overall dating back to a win against San Francisco on February 4th of last year, they finally got over the hump on Sunday with a 72-69 triumph versus Cal State Bakersfield to close out the non- conference portion of the schedule. LMU will now be fighting for back-to-back wins for the first time since stretching together three victories in a row versus Portland, Gonzaga and San Diego in early February of 2007. As the top rival for the Waves over the years, this meeting against LMU is number 148 in the all-time series, with Pepperdine holding an 87-60 edge over the Lions. The Waves, who have not lost to the Lions at Firestone Fieldhouse since the 1998-99 campaign, have swept the season series from Loyola Marymount in each of the last two seasons.
Needing a huge effort from someone in order to stop the bleeding that a 23- game winless streak brings, the Lions turned to Jarred DuBois who recorded 39 points to establish a new freshman record for the team as it posted a three- point win over Bakersfield. DuBois made 5-of-7 shots behind the three-point line, 11-of-15 from the floor and 12-of-15 free-throw chances in his outstanding game. LaRon Armstead and Kevin Young checked in with 12 and 11 points, respectively, and combined for 15 rebounds to offset their six turnovers.
It was only a matter of time before the Lions broke into the win column, but with Vernon Teel sidelined with an injury it took longer than expected. Now with 16 starts under his belt, DuBois leads all active players in scoring with 12.6 ppg, even though he is still shooting a mere 32 percent from the floor. In addition to his point production, DuBois is also first on the team with 49 assists, yet the group still has 100 more turnovers over 16 games. Because of the countless miscues, it should come as little surprise that LMU is scoring just 54.0 ppg thus far.
Upon returning from Honolulu after the tournament at the end of December, the Waves set themselves up for what should have been an easy win as they took down the Wolves by double digits. Mychel Thompson tallied a team-best 21 points, followed by Dane Suttle with 16 before he fouled out. while Taylor Darby registered a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds and Lorne Jackson pitched in with 10 points and five assists for a team that limited the visitors to a mere 5-of-27 shooting beyond the arc.
Despite shooting just 37.4 percent from the field thus far, Thompson leads the team with his 11.0 ppg, followed by Keion Bell with 10.6 ppg as the only other double-digit scorer at the moment. Like Thompson, Bell is also having a tough time finding the mark from the floor at just 39 percent, suffering from just 24.3 percent accuracy out on the perimeter as well. The team as a whole is converting 39.7 percent from the field and 33.6 percent behind the three-point line.
And, like the Lions, Pepperdine has had serious issues with keeping possession of the ball with 110 more turnovers (294) than assists (184). Neither one of these teams is playing all that well this season, but at least the Lions can be happy with the fact that they've finally worked their way into the win column before being taken down by Pepperdine tonight.

OPPONENT — Pepperdine is 87-60 all-time against Loyola Marymount. As one might expect with your chief rival, Pepperdine has played LMU more times than any other school. The Waves are in the midst of a very good stretch, having won 20 of the last 22 meetings between the schools dating back to the 1998-99 season. The Waves have swept the season series each of the last two seasons. Pepperdine has won 10 straight meetings in Firestone Fieldhouse (the last home loss coming in 1997-98) and are 28-8 in Malibu against the Lions.

LAST GAME — Mychel Thompson scored 21 points, including a couple of big baskets down the stretch, to lead Pepperdine to a 77-67 win over NCAA Division II opponent Western Oregon on Saturday (Jan. 3) at Firestone Fieldhouse. Thompson scored Pepperdine’s final nine points of the game after the Wolves pulled to within three points at 68-65 with 2:50 to play. Taylor Darby had his third double-double of the season with a season-high 15 points and 13 rebounds. Dane Suttle Jr. also had a season-high 16 points in just 18 minutes before fouling out.

ROTATION — Among the 10 players that have seen the most playing time lately, eight are freshmen or sophomores and seven weren’t on the roster last year ...

Right now they account for 58.1% of the scoring, compared to 27.9% by the sophomores and 14.0% by the seniors.
QUICK HITS — Pepperdine has led at halftime in each of the last four games. The Waves led at the half in only three of the first 12 games of the season ... After three straight games with 20+ turnovers (and 11 straight with 17 or more), the Waves have averaged just 12.3 in the last three game, including a season-low nine against Western Oregon .
..
Lorne Jackson has scored in double-figures in four straight games (13.0) and in nine of the last 11 games (12.0) ... Mychel Thompson has scored at least 18 points in three of the last five games and is averaging 14.8 ppg during that time.

INJURY UPDATE — Senior point guard Ryan Holmes suffered a sprained knee two minutes into the New Mexico State game on Nov. 21 and has missed 12 straight games. He was attempting a lay-up but an Aggie player landed on him. One of just three upperclassmen on the squad, the absence of Holmes’ experience and steady point guard play has been felt by the young Waves ... Sophomore forward Jonathan Dupre' suffered a sprained ankle against Georgia Tech on Dec. 20 and has not played in the last four games.

AGRE OUT — Sophomore center Denis Agre, in his first season at Pepperdine after transferring from Central Arizona College, is academically ineligible for the remainder of the season. He averaged 3.2 points and 3.6 rebounds and started seven of the first 16 games.

STAT LEADERS — Taylor Darby is fourth in the WCC in rebounding (7.6) ... Keion Bell is tied for sixth in steals (1.44), seventh in free throw percentage (.780) and 19th in scoring (10.6) ... Dane Suttle Jr. is sixth in three-point field goal percentage (.415) and three-pointers made (1.69) ... Rico Tucker is 11th in assists (2.50) ... Mychel Thompson is 16th in scoring (11.0).

Pepperdine’s 12-game losing streak tied the third-longest in program history and was the longest since the 1965-66 season.

NEWCOMERS — When Tom Asbury was hired in February, he was given a very late start to the recruiting process.

A year after playing just three non-conference home games, Pepperdine supporters were treated to eight this time around, including ones against such big-time opponents as Brigham Young and Georgia Tech, and in-state foes such as Cal State Bakersfield, UC Irvine and Pacific.

TOM ASBURY — It was announced on Feb. 19, 2008, that the architect of one of the best stretches in Pepperdine history, Tom Asbury, was returning to Malibu to become the Waves’ head coach again. Asbury was previously at Pepperdine for 15 seasons, the first nine as an assistant coach (1980-88) and then the next six as the head coach (1989-94). He then served as head coach at Kansas State from 1995-2000 and was most recently an assistant coach at Alabama from 2004-07. Asbury went 125-59 (.679) in his first six seasons with the Waves and 210-147 (.588) in his first 12 seasons overall as a head coach. The Waves went to the postseason five times in six years with three NCAA Tournament appearances (1991, ’92, ’94) and two in the NIT (1989, ’93). Pepperdine won three regular-season West Coast Conference titles, finished no worse than second in any of his six seasons and compiled a league record of 66-18 (.786). Pepperdine’s only three WCC Tournament championships came under Asbury.

ASSISTANTS — Tom Asbury wanted to find assistants with a passion for Pepperdine and an understanding of its mission, so he turned to three former student-athletes. It’s believed that Duke and Pepperdine have the only two college basketball staffs where the assistant coaches are all alums. Associate head coach Marty Wilson (1985-89) and assistant coaches Damin Lopez (1990-94) and Will Kimble (2001-03) played in three different eras, all successful. In the 13 seasons that made up their playing careers, Pepperdine went a combined 261-135 (.659), had 12 winning seasons, won six WCC regular-season titles and three WCC tournament titles, and made six NCAA Tournaments and four NITs.

RECRUITS — The Waves signed two players to letters-of-intent for 2009-10 during the early-signing period. They are 6-foot-3 point guard Josh Lowery (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) and 6-foot-9 forward/center Tanner Kerry (Sydney, Australia).

WCC PRESEASON POLL — Unfortunately, Pepperdine was picked to finish eighth in the conference’s preseason poll, done by a vote of the coaches. The predicted order of finish went Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s, San Diego, Santa Clara, San Francisco, Portland, Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine.

LAST SEASON — The midseason resignation of Vance Walberg and several player departures that followed contributed to Pepperdine’s third straight losing season, as the Waves finished 11-21 overall and sixth in the WCC at 4-10. They defeated Portland in the first round of the WCC Tournament before falling to eventual champion San Diego in the quarterfinals.

PEPPERDINE HISTORY — This is the 71st season of Pepperdine basketball, and the Waves opened 2008-09 with an all-time record of 1,102-887 (.554). Pepperdine has been to the NCAA Tournament 13 times (last in 2002), and has won 12 West Coast Conference regular-season titles (last in 2002) and three WCC Tournament crowns (last in 1994).
BEST IN THE WEST — Over the 30-season period from the 1978-79 season through the 2007-08 campaign, Pepperdine has proven itself as one of the top Division I programs on the West Coast. Of the 31 schools that currently play Division I basketball in California, Oregon or Washington, the Waves began the 2008-09 season ranking third overall in postseason appearances (16) and fifth in both wins (516) and winning percentage (.575) over the past 30 years.

WAVES IN THE PROS — Several former Pepperdine players have gone on to play in the NBA, most notably Dennis Johnson (the 1979 NBA Finals MVP) and Doug Christie (a 15-year NBA veteran who was a mainstay on the All-Defensive Team). Currently in the NBA is Yakhouba Diawara, now in his third season overall and his first with the Miami Heat. Alex Acker is on the Detroit Pistons’ roster for the second time, having also appeared briefly with the team in 2005-06. Some recent players have been playing in foreign countries, including Brandon Armstrong (Ukraine), Casey Crawford (Mexico), Tashaan Forehan-Kelly (New Zealand), Jelani Gardner (Greece), Kelvin Gibbs (Germany), Chase Griffin (Germany), Dana Jones (Switzerland) and Glen McGowan (Dominican Republic) and Levy Middlebrooks (Mexico). Robert "Hollywood" Turner, formerly a member of the Harlem Globetrotters, is now playing in Germany.

ABOUT PEPPERDINE — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won a total of nine NCAA championships in five different men’s sports — one of just 14 schools to have accomplished this feat. Of the 14, Pepperdine is the only non-BCS school and has by far the smallest enrollment. The majority of Pepperdine’s teams are ranked nationally year after year and several compete for conference and national titles.

MALIBU, Calif. — The Pepperdine men’s basketball team continued its home-court dominance of local rival Loyola Marymount, as the Waves pulled off a 59-57 victory in a West Coast Conference game at Firestone Fieldhouse on Saturday evening. The game was televised by ESPNU.

The Waves (4-13, 1-0) won their 11th straight home contest against the Lions (1-16, 0-1), and have been victorious in 21 of the last 23 meetings overall. Pepperdine also won for the third time in its last four games.

The final score wasn’t quite as close as it appeared, as the Waves led by nine with less than a minute to play and LMU’s LaRon Armstead banked in a three-quarter-court three-pointer at the buzzer.

Freshman guard Keion Bell (Los Angeles, Calif./Pasadena HS) scored a team-high 15 points for the Waves, and sophomore forward Mychel Thompson (Ladera Ranch, Calif./Stoneridge Prep) and freshman forward Dane Suttle Jr. (Los Angeles, Calif./Summit College Prep) each scored 12 points. LMU was led by Jarred DuBois’ 17 points and Armstead’s 16 points.

Pepperdine had a 44.7% to 35.5% edge in shooting percentage. The Waves finished with a 35-34 advantage in rebounding, but 11 LMU offensive rebounds helped the Lions to a 17-2 edge in second-change points. Suttle had seven of the Waves’ first 14 points, including two baskets in a 6-0 run that gave Pepperdine a 14-9 lead. The Lions countered with an 8-2 run, with two field goals by Armstead, as the Lions retook the lead at 17-16. With the score tied 21-21, Pepperdine outscored LMU 15-6 over the final five-plus minutes to go into halftime with a 36-27 lead.

A jumper by Thompson gave the Waves their biggest lead of the night at 38-27 to begin the second half, but the Waves then missed 10 straight shots and went scoreless for more than eight minutes. LMU, meanwhile, scored 15 straight points (five apiece by DuBois and Armstead) and went ahead 42-38 with less than 11 minutes to go.

Freshman forward Taylor Darby (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills HS) ended the drought with a lay-up off an inbounds pass off an assist from senior guard Rico Tucker (San Diego, Calif./University HS/Minnesota), and that began a 7-0 Pepperdine run that gave the Waves the lead back for good at 45-42 with 8:25 left.

Pepperdine’s lead was 47-46 with less than five minutes to go. It was then the Waves’ turn to make a defensive stand, as they held LMU scoreless for the next five minutes. The Lions missed five shots and turned the ball over three times during that time. The Waves scored the next seven points and led 54-46 with one minute remaining after senior guard Mike Hornbuckle (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS/Azusa Pacific) beat the shot clock with a jumper from the right side.

Thompson finished a fast break with a lay-up, was fouled and hit the free throw to help the Waves extend the lead to 57-48 with 46 seconds left. LMU cut into the lead, making it 57-52 with 20 seconds left and 58-54 with 8.7 seconds left but the Lions never had a chance to tie or take the lead. The game had a total of 12 lead changes and three ties.

Of the 10 players that saw action for the Waves, seven were freshmen or sophomores and six weren’t on the roster last year.

Senior guard Ryan Holmes (Phoenix, Ariz./Millennium HS/Phoenix CC), who had missed 12 straight games with a knee sprain, came off the bench and saw eight minutes of action. Sophomore forward Jonathan Dupre' (Houston, Texas/Marshall HS/Collin County CC) missed his fifth straight game with a sprained ankle.

The Waves continue WCC play next weekend at San Diego (Thursday, Jan. 15) and Saint Mary’s (Saturday, Jan. 17). Subscribers to “Wave Casts” at http://www.pepperdinesports.com/?DB_OEM_ID=18500 can hear Al Epstein’s call of the action.

Pepperdine Men's Basketball Game Notes

UPCOMING — The Pepperdine men’s basketball team begins the new year with its final non-conference game against Western Oregon, an NCAA Division II school, this weekend. After three strong showings at the Rainbow Classic, the Waves hope to continue to build up positive momentum heading into the West Coast Conference season.
Underclassmen are dominating the young Pepperdine lineup, as freshmen and sophomores are scoring more than 85% of the points.
GAME #16 — Saturday (Jan. 3) at Firestone Fieldhouse: Pepperdine (2-13) vs. Western Oregon (6-3) at 2 p.m.
TICKETS — Men’s basketball single-game tickets cost $15 (lower reserved), $12 (upper reserved), $10 (adult general admission) or $5 (children general admission). Call (866) WAVE-TIX to purchase tickets.
OPPONENT — This is Pepperdine’s first-ever meeting with Western Oregon, an NCAA Division II school located in Monmouth, Ore., which is a member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Wolves were slated to play Brigham Young (a previous Pepperdine opponent) last month but the game was rescheduled due to weather issues.
LAST THREE GAMES — The Waves finished in sixth place at the 45th Annual Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic, hosted by Hawaii, last weekend. In the opener, Buffalo’s Andy Robinson hit a short jumper with 0.8 seconds left to give the Bulls a 72-71 overtime victory and send the Waves to a heartbreaking loss. In a consolation bracket game, Lorne Jackson made a driving lay-up with 6.6 seconds left to give the Waves a 58-56 lead over Coppin State. Fortunately, Pepperdine wasn’t victimized by a buzzer-beater for the second straight night as the Eagles missed a three-pointer at the horn. The win ended Pepperdine’s 12-game losing streak. In the consolation championship game, host Hawaii pulled off a 78-70 win as the Waves finally ran out of gas in the second half of their third game in three days.
MORE RAINBOW CLASSIC NOTES — Pepperdine’s scoring leaders for the tournament were Lorne Jackson (14.0 ppg) and Mychel Thompson (11.0 ppg) ... Rebounding leaders were Taylor Darby (9.0 rpg) and Corbin Moore (7.3 rpg) ... Assist leader was Rico Tucker (3.0 apg) ... Pepperdine led at halftime in just three of the first 12 games this season, then led at the break at all three Rainbow Classic games ... It was Pepperdine’s second appearance at the Rainbow Classic after a fourth-place finish in 2003.
ROTATION — Among the 10 players that have seen the most playing time lately, eight are freshmen or sophomores and seven weren’t on the roster last year ...
Right now they account for 57.3% of the scoring, compared to 27.9% by the sophomores and 14.8% by the seniors.
INJURY UPDATE — Senior point guard Ryan Holmes suffered a knee injury two minutes into the New Mexico State game on Nov. 21 and has missed 11 straight games. He was attempting a lay-up but an Aggie player landed on him. It was diagnosed as a sprain and he is expected to be out until at least early January. One of just three upperclassmen on the squad, the absence of Holmes’ experience and steady point guard play has been felt by the young Waves ... Sophomore forward Jonathan Dupre' suffered a sprained ankle against Georgia Tech on Dec. 20 and did not play at the Rainbow Classic.
STAT LEADERS — Scoring leaders are freshman Keion Bell (11.1), sophomore Mychel Thompson (10.3), freshman Lorne Jackson (8.9) and freshman Dane Suttle Jr. (8.0) ... Rebounding leaders are freshman Taylor Darby (7.2), freshman Corbin Moore (5.0) and sophomore Denis Agre (3.8).
Pepperdine’s 12-game losing streak tied the third-longest in program history and was the longest since the 1965-66 season.
SOLES4SOULS — Pepperdine’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee, in conjunction with student-fan group Riptide, will be collecting shoes at Firestone Fieldhouse throughout the 2008-09 basketball season for Soles4Souls.
NEWCOMERS — When Tom Asbury was hired in February, he was given a very late start to the recruiting process.
NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE — The home schedule should be much more palatable to Waves fans in 2008-09. A year after playing just three non-conference home games, Pepperdine supporters will be treated to eight this time around, including ones against such big-time opponents as Brigham Young and Georgia Tech, and in-state foes such as Cal State Bakersfield, UC Irvine and Pacific. A few of the road games are notable too, including contests at Pac-10 foes Arizona State and USC. The Waves will also take part in the Rainbow Classic in Hawaii right after Christmas.
ASSISTANTSTom Asbury wanted to find assistants with a passion for Pepperdine and an understanding of its mission, so he turned to three former student-athletes.
Waves report: Getting inside
Oct. 25, 2008 The Sports Xchange

The tide nearly overtook Pepperdine last season. But this season, the Waves could benefit from a rocky season that should put a crop of talented underclassmen in a position to pull more than its share of surprises.
Pepperdine lost 21 games but showed dramatic improvement under interim coach Eric Bridgeland, who was replaced in the offseason by Tom Asbury. Asbury has a history of success at Pepperdine, having led the Waves to three NCAA Tournament berths in his six seasons as the Waves coach from 1989 through 1994.
Bridgeland should get credit for keeping this team competitive in light of the misseason coaching change and the departure of three key players immediately after Vance Walberg quit the job midway through his second season as coach.
There are many reasons for Pepperdine fans to be excited, but the Waves are still reeling from the loss of freshmen stars Tyrone Shelley and Malcolm Thomas. They were immediate assets but both opted to leave the program.
Still, there are valuable pieces for Asbury to mold. Pepperdine had a finishing kick down the stretch last March and momentum is on the Waves' side.
The Waves were 6-12 overall and 0-2 in the conference following a blowout loss to Gonzaga when Walberg left. They went 5-9 the rest of the way under Bridgeland, but won four of their last eight games, including a win in the first round of the WCC tournament even though Pepperdine was without its starting point guard, Rico Tucker.
Tucker, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament late in the season, should be back as a potential team centerpiece, but Asbury inherits a team that returns all of its key players.
Asbury was an assistant to Jim Harrick for nine seasons at Pepperdine and took over at the end of the 1988 season. He won the WCC three times and had two NIT berths in addition to the NCAA trips in 1991, '92 and '94.

MALIBU, Calif. — Sophomore forward Mychel Thompson scored 21 points, including a couple of big baskets down the stretch, to lead the Pepperdine men’s basketball team to a 77-67 victory over Western Oregon on Saturday afternoon at Firestone Fieldhouse.

The Waves won for the second time in three games and improved to 3-13. Western Oregon, an NCAA Division II school, fell to 6-4. Thompson (Ladera Ranch, Calif./Stoneridge Prep), who also had seven rebounds and three assists, was one of four Waves in double-figures. He scored Pepperdine’s final nine points of the game after the Wolves pulled within three points at 68-65 with 2:50 to play.

Freshman forward Taylor Darby (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills HS) had his third double-double of the season with a season-high 15 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman forward Dane Suttle Jr. (Los Angeles, Calif./Summit College Prep) had 16 points in 18 minutes before fouling out and freshman guard Lorne Jackson (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley HS) added 10 points and five assists.

Western Oregon had its offense clicking early, and with the help of two three-pointers by Sam Kelly, the Wolves grabbed a 14-7 lead at the first media timeout. The Waves awoke with a 14-2 run over the next 4 ½ minutes, with Thompson scoring seven of the points. That gave Pepperdine a 21-16 lead with 11:28 left.

The Waves’ lead grew to 25-19 after a lay-up by senior guard Mike Hornbuckle (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS/Azusa Pacific) and 29-22 after a lay-up by freshman center Corbin Moore (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) off a terrific entry pass from freshman guard Keion Bell (Los Angeles, Calif./Pasadena HS). Pepperdine took a double-digit lead at 37-27 with less than five minutes to go after Jackson drained a three-pointer from the left wing. Western Oregon closed out the half on a 6-2 run, and Pepperdine went into the break ahead 41-35.

After Thompson hit a three-pointer to make the score 52-40 with 16:05 to play, the Waves maintained a double-digit lead for the next nine minutes. The biggest lead was 15 points at 56-41 with 13:45 left. Later, two free throws by Suttle gave the Waves a 66-52 lead with 8:43 to play.

Over the next five minutes, however, Pepperdine missed seven shots and committed two turnovers, and Western Oregon went on an 11-0 run, fueled by five points by Stanley Ratcliffe and a pair of baskets by Blair Wheadon, to cut Pepperdine’s lead to just three points at 66-63 with 3:55 left. Darby finally ended the drought with a putback with 3:23 to play, but the Wolves made it a three-point game again at 68-65 with 2:50 left after two Travis Kuhns free throws.

Thompson helped rescue the Waves from there, as he first hit a jumper from the left baseline, then a three-pointer from the top of the key, to push Pepperdine’s lead back up to 73-65 with 1:40 left. He went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final 30 seconds to ice the victory.

Both teams’ shooting cooled off in the second half. The Waves shot 48.6% in the first half but finished at 40.0%. The Wolves shot 32.8% for the game, a season low by a Pepperdine opponent. Pepperdine had a season-low nine turnovers and a season-high 19 assists. The Waves had 18 offensive rebounds and turned that into a 20-8 edge in second-chance points. Western Oregon had five players score in double-figures, led by 16 points from Wheadon.

Of the 10 players that saw action for the Waves, eight were freshmen or sophomores and seven weren’t on the roster last year. The Waves played their 12th straight game without Ryan Holmes (Phoenix, Ariz./Millennium HS/Phoenix CC), their starting point guard and one of just three seniors, who is sidelined by a knee injury. Sophomore forward Jonathan Dupre' (Houston, Texas/Marshall HS/Collin County CC) missed his fourth straight game with a sprained ankle.
The Waves begin West Coast Conference play next Saturday (Jan. 10) against local rival Loyola Marymount at 8 p.m. The game will be shown on ESPNU. Subscribers to “Wave Casts” at http://www.pepperdinesports.com/?SPSID=90183&SPID=10851&DB_OEM_ID=18500 can hear Al Epstein’s call of the action.
