California High School Football - Pacifica beaten by Simi Valley (September 9, 2005: Simi Valley, CA 93063) The Pacifica Tritons football team (Oxnard, CA), lost 38-13 in Friday's non-league game with the host Simi Valley Pioneers (Simi Valley, CA)
OUTLOOK: Simi’s offense, led by a 166-yard, three-touchdown night by running back Devin Kelley, made short work of Pacifica, 38-13, at home last Friday.
While the running game looked great, it was the performance of quarterback Bryan Randolph (13-of-24 passing for 218 yards and one touchdown) and a defense that shut out Pacifica in the first half that may have been the most impressive aspect of the game for the Pioneers.

Deuce's picks:
Friday, September 14, 2007
There is no history between the Santa Paula High and Villanova Prep football programs. You'd think there would be.
Santa Paula has fielded football teams for more than eight decades. Before it put football in deep freeze after the 1975 season (the sport was reinstated in 2001), Villanova was a longtime card-carrying member of the Tri-Valley League.
The two teams meet for the first time tonight in Santa Paula.
And, the Deuce predicts, this will be the first of many meetings between the two West County teams.
In fact, the odds are the two will be members of the Frontier League next year after the Tri-Counties Athletic Association adjusts its leagues.
Last week was a bummer 10th anniversary of the first edition of Deuce's picks.
Damaged, but still holding his own, the Deuce staggers into today's second round of the high school football season confident he won't be swinging and missing.
Last week: 11-8. Season: 16-10, .614.
Moorpark 27, Ventura 17: Would you believe Moorpark is throwing more passes per game than Newbury Park? What's the world coming to?
Agoura 24, Camarillo 14: Good news for Agoura: Camarillo kicker Jorge Vazquez, who kicked two 45-plus field goals last year and a game-winner in the 2005 playoffs against Agoura, has officially graduated.
Thousand Oaks 21, Atascadero 12: Both teams are coming off good outings in losses to strong opponents. Thousand Oaks alternated QBs against Loyola.
Newbury Park 17, Rio Mesa 13: Newbury Park is one of only three teams to beat Rio Mesa in the regular season over the last three years. Expect Rio Mesa to try to disrupt the Panthers' passing game with variety of blitzes.
Hueneme 30, Calabasas 20: Win here would be boost for either program. Hueneme WR Travaun Nixon could be one of the Pacific View League's top playmakers.
Buena 33, Channel Islands 19: Vince McCowan had breakout game with 142 yards rushing in Buena's opener. Frankie Romero has settled in nicely as CI's quarterback.
Simi Valley 27, Pacifica 17: How does Simi Valley contain Pacifica QB Vince Moraga? Keep handing the ball off to Langston Jackson and Tommy Dowling and run out the clock.
Westlake 23, Saugus 20: First of two straight matchups against premier Foothill League teams for Westlake. Good thing that Westlake had week off.
San Luis Obispo 17, Oxnard 16: Oxnard will need to cut down on the number of penalties (10) and show more of a passing threat than it did against Santa Barbara.
Canyon 35, St. Bonaventure 28: Linemen on crutches is never a good sign. Could be a major reason why St. Bonaventure has had some offensive struggles in the first two games.
Big Bear 31, Grace Brethren 23: Almost a sure bet this game will continue past 10 p.m. (Grace Brethren had school-record 59 passing attempts last year against Big Bear). Plan accordingly.
Nordhoff 28, Santa Ynez 14: Play-action passes keep Nordhoff's opponents honest.
Santa Paula 19, Villanova 16: Swarming Santa Paula defense will try to take away Villanova's running game. (Note to Villanova AD II: If you're going to schedule games against Ventura County teams, make sure it's for a down year, not when the opponent is on the upswing.)
Fillmore 24, Mojave 17: After rough outing last week, Fillmore bounces back. Flashes need to repeat first game script with more than 200 yards rushing.
Oak Park 13, Royal 10: Oak Park was 3-0 against Northern Division programs last year. Duplicating that performance will be strong test for the Eagles.
Santa Clara 20, St. Genevieve 19: Santa Clara's defense did not allow a point in the matchup against St. Genevieve in 2006. Santa Clara offense needs to find other options than Cierre Wood and Randi Vines.

Prep football notebook: Dramatic finish a relief for Pacifica
By Derry Eads Monday, September 17, 2007
No Ventura County football team has played in more overtime games in the past five years than Pacifica High.
The Tritons were one play away from their fourth overtime game since the program started varsity football in 2002. Pacifica coach Donnie Rea thought it was inevitable. That's when the game took a couple of crazy turns. On fourth down and the clock winding down, Pacifica quarterback Vincent Moraga stood in shotgun formation. The ball was snapped over his head.
Moraga scooped up the ball 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage, found a couple of blockers and made a mad dash, where he was tackled out of bounds at the Simi Valley 23-yard line.
"I first thought that we're in overtime for sure," said Rea. "Then I realized that we had made a first down."
The Pacifica players rushed to their places on the line of scrimmage in time for Moraga to spike the ball with four seconds remaining. Antonio Vega nailed a 40-yard field goal as time expired as Pacifica defeated Simi Valley, 17-14.
"That could have been a 60-yarder," said Rea. "He really pounded it."It was a dramatic turnaround for Pacifica, which lost its opener on the road against Cabrillo/Lompoc.
Outside a 98-yard TD pass from Tim Ferralli to Keith Williams, the Pacifica defense held Simi Valley to 62 total yards. Langston Jackson, who rushed for 164 yards in Simi Valley's opener, was contained to 23 yards on 21 carries.
"I can't tell you how many tackles that (outside linebacker) A.J. Guzman had," said Rea. "He must have had seven or eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He was making plays all over the place." Perhaps Guzman's biggest play came midway into the fourth quarter. As a Simi Valley quarterback's arm was moving forward, Guzman hit it. The ball floated into the arms of Jaime Razo, who returned it 45 yards for a game-tying touchdown. Pacifica also had strong defensive games from Art Sitafine, Jose Ramos and Matt Madrid.
"It was hard to find people who didn't play well," said Rea.

Pacifica beats Simi Valley on last-second field goal
By Rich Romine Saturday, September 15, 2007
Antonio Vega connected on a 40-yard field goal as time expired Friday night as Pacifica High earned a 17-14 non-league victory over visiting Simi Valley.
Pacifica (1-1) rallied from a 14-7 deficit in the fourth quarter.
Simi Valley (1-1) was held scoreless for three quarters but erupted for pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
A goal-line stand on the final play of the third quarter ignited Simi Valley.
The Pioneers kept Frankie Estanol out of the end zone. On a second-down play, Keith Williams raced 98 yards for a touchdown on pass from Tim Ferralli. David Castro kicked the extra point to tie the game at 7-7 with 11:45 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Simi Valley's Adam Hernandez then intercepted a Vince Moraga pass and returned it 41 yards for the go-ahead score. Castro's PAT kick made it 14-7 with 10:44 left.
Pacifica's Jaime Razo turned hero as he retured an interception 75 yards for a touchdown. Vega added the game-tying PAT with 6:59 left.
Estanol rushed for 112 yards and scored the game's first touchdown on a 1-yard run. Vega's kick made it 7-0.
In the closing minutes of the game, the Tritons drove 27 yards on five plays to set up Vega's winning heroics.
Pacifica coach Donnie Rea credited the defense for outstanding play.
"Our defense played as good as any of my teams in the past," said Rea.
Marcus Sandoval, Ricardo Moreno, A.J. Guzman, Matthew Rivera, Hakeem Hassan, Matt Madrid and Mark Sitafine anchored the Tritons defense. It held Langston Jackson to 26 yards on 21 carries.
"We wanted to put pressure on the running back and we loaded up on him," said Rea, who credited his son, Donnie Jr., for his defensive gameplan.
But Todd Borowski, the Simi Valley coach, said his team's junior offensive line was exposed.
"They took advantage of our young offensive line," said Borowski.
Pacifica put pressure on junior quarterback Jared Zahorik, who completed only four passes for 47 yards.
Borowski said the game-tying interception resulted when Pacifica's defense hit Zahorik's arm and the ball flew into the hands of Razo.
"We know what we have to work on," Borowski said. "Last week's game (a win) was a false sense of security."

Re: RUNNING BACKS IN MARMONTE LEAGUE
Langston Jackson had 25 carries for 147 yards. Aveging 5.9 ain't bad but wait until he sees some good defenses. Then we can praise him. I like Chris brown's moves and he could have a big year. Looks to have some speed which is the big asset.
John Lister is the prototype big powerful running back. He is the workhorse type and will put up good numbers. Nick Azoff from Agoura had only 9 carries but gained 99 yards and scored one TD. With Doug Shumway at QB they should have a good year. Go Chargers. Royal's RB Derek Morris had 19 carries for 123 yards and 2 TD's. He could be a good one. Cooper Schockley could be one of the better backs in the Marmonte League. Has quick acceleration and maybe not as fast as former Stud Jeff Rapoport but if he gets loose in the secondary say bye to him. All of these guys work very hard and I would wish them all a great Season. Good luck and good health to all.

Re: RUNNING BACKS IN MARMONTE LEAGUE
homer, please get off of Cooper Schockley's jock...he hasn't done anything yet...which one of those backs mentioned has 4 D1 offers with more on the way? ONE and his name is Langston Jackson....which one ran for 1000 years last year behind a dismal line? Langston Jackson...which one had a defense keying on him all night and still had 172 yards? Langston Jackson...now you gurus are praising the kid from royal when he got the majority of his yards against the chaminade 2nd team or is the nade going to tell me that the eagle defense is that pourus? Well I guess according to you homer, Jackson hasn't done much...ask coach b who he would rather have in his backfield...jackson or the incredible cooper schockley...open your eyes homer...the D1 guys cant all be wrong

Re: RUNNING BACKS IN MARMONTE LEAGUE
So we should only recognize Jackson? No one else matters. Come on Simihomer, give these other kids some credit.

Re: RUNNING BACKS IN MARMONTE LEAGUE
On Saturday it will be, "sure Jackson rushed for 200 yards this week, but it was only Pacifica.....".Next week it will be, "Jackson deserves no credit for anything against a Pacific League team".The following week, when Jackson gets 99 yards, it will be "See...first real team they play and they hold him to under 100".

Re: RUNNING BACKS IN MARMONTE LEAGUE
Agoura's two backs looked good last week. Adam Azoff had 99 yards and Sam Bradley scored 2 TD's. How many more Bradley's are there at Agoura? Jackson, Lister and Shockley are all good RB's and will put up some nice numbers. Brown will be fun to watch at NP and all the passing should open up some holes for him. Royal always seems to have a good RB and their kid this year is solid.

Re: RUNNING BACKS IN MARMONTE LEAGUE
Langston is a great kid. He stuck by a school with a loosing record. The kid would easily start and lead anyother team to the playoffs. Thats character.
The kid your all talking about at Royal is Derek Morris.... Im sure some of you remember his older brothers... A great family.
