Cali back gets first offer
Dan Sorensen UteZone.com

The summer got off to a good start for Langston Jackson, a 6-foot-1 inch 200 pound running back from Simi Valley (Calif.) High School. He's gearing up for a successful senior campaign and just received his first Division I scholarship offer. The Utes for their part are looking to add depth to the running back corps and are looking to bring in at least two more in the '08 class.

July 26, 2007 Marmonte League quarterback battles picking up steam By Stephen Dorman sdorman@theacorn.com
BILL SPARKES/Acorn Newspapers
MAY THE BEST MAN WIN- With the professional sports world embroiled in off-field drama, let's turn our attention to the local high school football scene, where quarterback battles are heating up from Calabasas to Simi Valley. In the first installment of a two-part series, we'll take a look at the Marmonte League and its eight teams' projected starting signal-callers. Some of the league's quarterbacks have already locked up jobs, while others still have something to prove to their respective coaching staffs before they'll be named the No. 1 guy to start the season.
Here's the way things shape up behind center as we head into the final days of July:

Simi Valley
Simi Valley head coach Todd Borowski is looking for a quarterback who can read defenses well and put the ball in the proper spots on the field, all while limiting turnovers and serving as a team leader.
With that in mind, he'll hand the reigns of the Pioneers' offense to one of two juniors- Jared Zarhorek or Tim Farelli.
Both Zarhorek and Farelli played on the SVHS sophomore team last season. According to Borowski, Zarhorek is great at sizing up defenses, while Farelli possesses a strong arm and is accurate when throwing the deep ball. "It's a battle between those two," Borowski said. "I always tell the kids that nothing is won or lost during the summer; it's won or lost when we put the pads on."
With senior Langston Jackson, arguably the league's premier running back, lining up in the offensive backfield, the Pioneers' starting signalcaller will have a valuable asset at his disposal.
Jackson's "definitely going to help either one of those guys progress," Borowski said, adding that a final decision on the starting quarterback won't come until the regular season is near.

Re: MARMONTE LEAGUE PLAYERS
OK here goes. Best WR in the Marmonte League and in Ventura County is Westlake's Curtis Peterson.QB to look out for is the Warriors Nick Owens. Also Doug Shumway from Agoura , Adam Barry from Moorpark and Colby Cameron from Newbury Park are the guys that will have big years. John Lister from T.O. could have a huge year at RB. Believe he will be a Junior this year so he should only get better. Last year he was a stud.

Re: MARMONTE LEAGUE PLAYERS
I'll base my picks on stats not necessarily talent.
QB's
1) Colby Cameron - NP- They normally pass 90% of the time this year they'll pass 80%.
2) Doug Shumway- Agoura- May be more balanced with a good line and much better receiving core
3) Nick Owens- Westlake- One good receiver who will get a majority of the passes. RB's 1) John Lister- TO- Good O-line, Great Running back. TO will rely on the run this year. 2) Langston Jackson- Simi- Could easily be #1 but T.O. will have a much better line. Even with a mediocre line Langston will literaly carry the load for the Pioneers.

Re: Marmonte non-league
Agoura is staying local but will find out if they are playoff caliber with games 9/07 against Ventura, and 9/20 against Rio Mesa. Game in between is Camarillo. Haven't heard much about what to expect out of them.
Calabasas, understandably, is looking for a win in their first 3 games. Opening 9/07 against City school El Camino Real, followed by Hueneme then Channel Islands. Nothing is a lock when your program has gone down this far.
Moorpark will be well tested in preseason opening on Thursday 8/30 at home against Mayfair, at team that went 10-1 last year. Followed by Hart and then Ventura. This schedule was probably made up when Darrell Scott was still with the team.
Newbury Park opens somewhat softly with games against Camarillo on 9/07 and then Rio Mesa. A tough lower division opponent in week 3, Oak Park, should test whether they are a Marmonte playoff team or not.
Royal has not taken the easy road as they open up at home against Chaminade, then Oak Park, then Ventura. If they win these games, which I'm not sure they will, they will be a factor in the Marmonte race.
Simi Valley is looking for wins. They start at home on 9/07 against Buena, then on the road against Pacifica, then at home against Burbank, who they beat 19-10 last year.
Thousand Oaks will be tested early with their opening game at Loyola on 9/08, then at home against Atascadero, but might have a soft third contest when they face Camarillo.

"I'm not scared...Simi starts 4-0, for sure!"

Re: Marmonte League Predictions
TO's running back is the best in the league?...he is good, but L. Jackson has multiple D1 offers and gained the majority of his 1000 yards on his own last year...Qball...your name says it all..

Re: Marmonte League Predictions
1 - Thousand Oaks - The time has come. There is a new attitude to go along with a whole bunch of talent. The juniors have been dominating since their youth football days. The next couple years look like good ones as coach Leibin shows what all the hype is about. 2 - Newbury Park - I thought they were the sleeper but apparently the word is out. The NP system will be in full swing with the usual assortment of skill players including possibly the top QB in the area, then add to that a new dimension - front line dominance. This will be the only real threat to the Lancers in Marmonte play this year. 3 - Westlake - DScott or not, Coach B has the talent he needs to put together yet another very solid team. Always well coached and always strong up front, you have to give the Warriors respect. 4 - Agoura - They seem to be picking it up in passing league after getting schooled by Simi a few weeks ago. As with the other teams I rank below them there are many question marks, but you have to give the nod to the program that has shown consistent success over the years. 5 - Simi - It is understandable why they get little respect as it's been some time since they've made the playoffs. I like John Lister as much as anyone, but Simi has the top RB in the league along with the core of their very solid defense from 2006 returning. The big question, as always, is how they will do in the trenches. Don't expect a walk in the park when the Pioneers show up. 6 - Moorpark - I may live to regret this ranking, and no disrespect to coach Lins, but I just don't see how this team can recover from the loss of talent. Their JV team last year was, well, not good. They lost their entire line, their top defensive players and their all-world RB. On the positive side, their QB has superior skills - I just don't know if he can put the whole team on his shoulders. 7 - Royal - Who are these guys? They will be strong up front as they seem to be every year but I don't know of any impact players other than their returning star linebackers. I would be surprised if they competed for a playoff spot. The bottom line in this league is there is not a whole lot of separation between #4 and #7 and anything can happen. 8 - Calabasas - I don't want to talk bad about the kids. They are working hard and want to turn their program around. Let's just say that the talent isn't there this year to compete in this league.

Re: Marmonte League Predictions
This above post by "q-ball" will be really funny by the third game of the season. Critics that have never played the game will not understand high school kids improving 50% post season. That is why the term "stepping up" is a goal for the "top" athletes. Until then hush, Jackson and Lister will prove who will be the better runner quickly. I've seen both, there is a BIG difference, I won't mention names. As well, I see more parity in the league now than in the past few years. What happened last year is gone. New players. New scenarios.Thought: Darrell Scott, inc. has a great skill in knowing who the best OL is, from George H. to V. Dotsy. Not too bad.

Re: MARMONTE LEAGUE PLAYERS
QB 1. Adam Barry - hands down the best physical tools in the league. 2. Colby Cameron - should have a big year now that he has a year under his belt. (BTW: NP passes about 2/3 of the time, not 90%) 3. Nick Owens - solid Q who won't make many mistakes - getting some looks. (BTW: will have more than one receiver) RB 1. Langston Jackson – can run by you but prefers to run you over. (BTW: Simi has some other weapons) 2. John Lister - just keeps getting better and better. will be the point man on the way to a league championship. 3. Cooper Shockley - will get the carries for Westlake in a balanced offense. WR 1. Curtis Peterson - will give the Westlake offense their "Oh sh*t" factor. 2. Danny Diefenthaler - marmonte pa announcers are going to get tired of calling his name - should pull down about 60 passes this year. 3. Keith Williams - remember his name. he's only a junior. O Line 1. Agoura - boys get real big in this program. 2. TO - not only big and strong, but they know what they're doing. 3. NP - definitely physical specimens, let's see what they do on Friday nights. Defense 1. TO - great scheme. great coaching. great players. 2. Westlake - a lot of talent and don't think coach B is lost without coach L. 3. Simi – laugh now, then give me some credit in december.

"We pick SIMI!!!!"

The Star's picks
By Loren Ledin Friday, August 24, 2007

1. Newbury Park
Led by quarterback Colby Cameron, the talent is in place to win the program's first league championship since 1999. The real key may come down to attitude: Do the Panthers have the confidence to win the close games?
2. Westlake
After two down seasons, the Warriors rebounded all the way to a league title in 2006. RB Cooper Shockley and WR Curtis Peterson offer big-play potential, but either Nick Owens or Ben Conlin will need to step to the forefront at quarterback.
3. Moorpark
An eventful offseason featured the transfer of running back Darrell Scott. Now the offense will rise or fall with the play of quarterback Adam Barry. If the defense, as usual, matures into a solid unit, the Musketeers again shape up as a top league contender.
4. Thousand Oaks
Highly respected defensive coordinator Mike Leibin, formerly of Westlake High, finally has his own team to run. Considering the offense features gifted junior running back John Lister, strong play by the Lancers defense could equate to a run at the league title.
5. Agoura
Doug Shumway is one of only three returning starting quarterbacks in the league, which gives the Chargers an obvious edge. With good skill players and a big offensive line, Agoura will score points. The Chargers' league fortunes should ultimately be decided by the play of their defense.
6. Royal
Coach Gene Uebelhardt thinks he has not one, but two quarterbacks who can become stars. If sophomore Brian Blechen and junior Trevor Shubert do develop, then the Highlanders are solid in enough other areas to compete for a playoff berth.
7. Simi Valley
One of these seasons, the Pioneers will indeed make the leap to elite league contender. Senior running back Langston Jackson is already one of the region's top players. If youngsters develop along the offensive and defensive line, then this could be Team Surprise.
8. Calabasas
The first challenge is to stop that 42-game losing streak. Highly regarded first-year coach Lance Martin just might be the man to affect positive change. Then the Coyotes can focus on forward progress in the league standings.
